Nice...is that a male texas rat?

monklet May 20, 2010 10:12 AM

That's ok Matt, that's a great TRat, and those PJs rock! Do you have a reasonably accurate length on the beast?

I know, everyone ragged me about the pj's the last time I posted these pics, so I retired them. It's a wild caught male from Calcasieu Parish, LA. He's a little over six feet and solid. He's got more girth to him now. That pic was taken right after brumation.

Nice TX rat, Matt!

Don't let them get you down on the pj's - I have the same exact style / color, and they are my faves! LOL!

Definitely the nicest pic of a spilotes that I've seen but there's nothing to compare it too size wise.

Great post theme. I'll try to get a pic of me holding my big Baird's today.

So, can all the Beauty's, cave dwellers, radiated's get over 7'? Are they fast growers too?

Is that a black rat lbrat?

Chinese Beauties (Orthriophis taeniurus taeniurus) usually max out at six feet or under, but can get a bit larger. I have a couple which are at least a little over six feet long. They are one of the smallest of the beauty subs. Fast growers - yes!

Radiated rats (Coelognathus) are not closely related to the beauties - but yeah, they get long too...

Thanks Brad, the only one that is actually nasty is the big mocquardi in the middle photo and she can be a true beast. The blue female in the top photo is actually not bad at all.

Randy! Holy cow!
Where did you get that picture of that blue beauty!
That is the very shot that was provided to me of the snake I now have that I bought from "off the ark" pet store from the classifeds here.
I have that pic saved to my computor! I know it was on the add here on the classified, what two years back now(???)is that where you got it?
Incidentally he is now 9 1/2' robust and still full of piss and vinegar! Named him Demon for a reason.
(He just shed and as we all know the shed is longer but it measures almost 12'!)
Mike.

randywhittington May 21, 2010 07:40 AM

Mike,
I personally took that picture of my adult female blue beauty a while ago. That is a old BARRS cage she was in when I took the photo. If you bought yours by that shot it was not the snake you got. I only post photos I have personally taken myself.

pinelandsghost May 24, 2010 12:48 AM

OK Randy, I believe you. Mine's a male but a dead ringer to yours, temperment and all .
I guess the shop borrowed the shot off an earlier post.
After a battle with lung worms I made out ok and hes doing well.
Someday I'd like to get a blue female for him.
Mike.

a153fish May 23, 2010 12:04 PM

Those are nice. Is that blue as mean as it looks? How are their temperments and which do you prefer?

Here are some of my 07 blue beauty.

This is back when he was 8 ft and left ~10 ft skins.

He is now well over 9 ft, maybe even closer to 10. His last skin was 11 ft 7 inches long when I found it still damp and he weighs between 5 and 6 lbs. He can eat a large breeder rat in under a minute.

SerpentesCiconii May 20, 2010 09:34 PM

This Spilotes is the same age (07) but is dwarfed by the blue. These pics were taken when he was in the 6 ft range, but he is now around 7 ft and weighs 1200 grams.

monklet May 20, 2010 10:58 PM

That is just mind boggling!!! What a snake. The blue is out-of-this-world!

He's very cage defensive but I haven't had much trouble with him once he's out. If I need to get him out for whatever reason I just wait for him to go under a hide then lift the hide, drop a towel over his head, and pull him out.

pinelandsghost May 24, 2010 01:12 AM

Mine is cage defensive to a degree but is tolerant to my fussing around when spot cleaning his tank. He'll warn me before he strikes and I can usually pick him up without a problem.
The biggest problem I run into is when he's out and that is because he's so damned big. He can easily reach out to basement rafters, lighting fixtures, etc...he'll climb into everything before I know it.
It can be a pain. Blues love to climb.
The under side of my snake room ceiling is all of that so sometimes I just let him have his way and he is all over the rooms ceiling having a blast.
Getting him untangled and back in his tank can get a little involved though.
Mike.
