Tromping around in Central, WA

Andyh May 20, 2010 08:07 PM

Headed east of the mountains last weekend for some camping and herping near Umtanum, WA.

It’s a beautiful area but seems to get more crowded every year. The University of WA biology department has recently been bringing students herping out here. That would be a good thing if they didn’t leave so many rocks overturned. Not sure if they collect. No gopher snakes this trip, but there are still plenty or northern pacific rattlers, racers, and garter snakes. Enjoy.

My sister even came with us

It was a little too cold at night for anything besides insects, field mice and arachnids.

Northern scorpion

The Northern Pacific rattlers were out in full force.

Smaller adult with light coloration

A well-fed NorPac. At least 30” long.

During our south texas excursion, our herp prof would have made us *walk* back to Amarillo if we messed up the area.

Nice finds I like the bugs, even if they sort of creep me out.

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

Ha, I know what you mean.

I'd be just as comfortable locked in a basement full of snakes as I would be a basement full of puppies, but arachnids are another story.

They can be seriously interesting, but they still get my heart pounding if they surprise me.

The scariest moment I've had herping: I looked under a bit of rock, and instead of a snake or lizard I found a freaking solfugid. SCARED ME. Like the unholy spawn of a tarantula and scorpion and one of those things from aliens.

Thanks Dan.

Those habitat shots are what's going to convince me to buy a better camera.
