Do mites come from an outside source into the habitat or do they develop some how from poor maintence?

Mites don't just spring out of nowhere, they come from either an outside source (new animals brought into a collection, contact with a mite infested animal could also allow mites to 'piggy back' on your clothing as well, etc.).
If mites were present on your animals in the past, its possible eggs lain in some crevice outside of an enclosure hatched and new mites come out to seek appropriate animals to feed on.
It is also possible they could come from outside, if there are alot of reptiles near your home as well, though most mites are pretty species specific.
