what should I/shouldn't I do with my carpets.......???

JustinM. Sep 22, 2003 05:30 PM

To Everyone,

I just purchsed a 7 foot long, 3 yr. old (as far as I know, virgin, but checking up on it) diamond X jungle cross. I also have a 7 foot male pure jungle carpet arriving tomorrow. Lastly, I have a 5 foot 2 yr. old female coastal carpet. I'm looking to start breeding in the near future and I want to see what everyones' opinions on breeding my male with the females I have and general breeding tips that anyone can provide? Thank you in advance!

I bet you 95% of the people who read this don't like the idea. And I'm not one to conform, but I am going to in this case. Fist I understand the desire to breed and have little hatchlings, it's hard to fight. Lets say you do breed them, what will you do with the babies?, because good luck selling them. Crosses just don't sell, especially the ones your talking about. Most people breed for things like color or pattern. I myself am going to try to breed bright yellow 50/50 JCP's. I see no benefit to breed any of my jungles to a coastal other than the fact that I could, which 9 isn't a good enough reason. My advice would be to either get some more snakes or trade so you have two JCP's or two coastals. Later, BrianD

If your going to breed crosses have a goal in mind. Go for look/color/pattern/temperment, but don't just breed your snakes just because you 'want to breed'.

If you absolutely HAVE to breed what you currently have I'd go for breeding the DxJ and the jungle but don't cross the Coastal.
The lines between Coastals and jungles are muddy enough without having more crosses out there.

Best of luck and if you get a chance to post some pics we'd love to see 'em!

I wouldn't cross them either, especially the coastal and the jungle. Coastal X Jungles really aren't that attractive at all. There would really be no point in producing them. I'd also try to advise you to trade to get a male coastal or female jungle to breed. I'd decide if you have a nicer female coastal or male jungle, then I'd get the corresponding mate.

Thanks to everyone that responded!

I def. would not cross the coastal with the jungle. I just wanted to see what you guys offer for advice for breeding. But, would the jungle with the diamond/jungle cross be a reasonable pair to mate? The babies would be 75% jungle 25% diamond right?? Lastly, if I ever do breed my snakes in the future, I will purchase at least 2-3 other snakes to match my 3 species/(cross). I may breed if my coworker decides to purchase some carpets in the future. Until then, I'm enjoying these wonderful creatures. I didn't mean to scare anyone; I just wanted opinions is all. Thanks!

There is one certain reason why DxJ are more accepted than other crosses. Keeping Diamonds sucessfully in captivity can be difficult to say the least and they're numbers are not increasing to meet the demand for them. As such the DxJ is kinda the 'poor man's Diamond'. So what sells the DxJ is not the Jungle blood. Its the Diamond blood and that is what idealy you'd what to cross with DxJ if you can.
