I keep getting skunked

varanid May 22, 2010 02:43 PM

I've gone otu the last three weekends...seen more amphibians than usual which is nice, but not a lot of lizards and NO SNAKES! Not one!

The guy from Montana's having better luck than the guy from Texas...that's just wrong.
Went to what looked like a very promising area today...large rock formation, lots of nooks and crannies.
There may have been herps there...but there were DEFINITELY widows. I saw maybe 2 dozen and said screw it I'm getting out of here. I can handle spiders but widows are a bit much. Lots of egg sacks too. Ever nook I tried to look into...a visible black widow or web. Flipped some rocks...jumping spiders, some interesting beetles (which were neat)...but no herps.
I just spend 3-4 hours and saw, herp wise *one* checkered whiptail. Friday I found 3 or 4 S. undulatus and some leopard frogs and a B. punctatus.

I'm getting frustrated and had to vent.

Almost put my hand there...we were near a rock formation, lots of loose small to mid sized slabs of rock, looked real promising. Slipped on some loose gravel/dirt, and caught myself...she was maybe a foot from my hand. Took the picture, called it a day as far as that place was concerned. Went hiking found a Collared

I would NOT sneeze at the Collared Lizard. IME, they are very hard to get close too.
Great pic!

There's two places in Palo Duro that have *great* populations; one's on the Gibb's Simm running trail and the others this little barely there trail (not on the map but it does an actual trail head) that's right past some snack stand. There may be more but those two places are where I usually see them. On a good day I've seen an even dozen on a hike. They're probably one of my favorite lizards

Yeah, I love the little dinosaurs! LOL Actually, the first lizard I caught in Barstow, California. Led me on a chase too, only ever saw them in the moutains, in very rocky terrain.
I've seen Eastern Collareds in the Arkansas River Valley, in rock piles. That was in the huge metropoplis of Coal Hill. LOL. Never got close to the Easterns though. The Californian one was a different species.

Sincerely,
Matthew

I feel your pain, just a little. Actually. I've seen more reptiles than amphibians this year. Of course, being between jobs DOES give me a wee bit more time out in the county. Not 2-3 days max, like the last 3 years.
I got skunked by the snakes down in the Trans-pecos a week & half ago. Didn't realize how high in altitude the town & desert would be. Made it april, not may Temp wise.

Sincerely,
Matthew
