Portland Area

We have been experiencing unseasonable low temps lately so I have resorted to finding our more cold tolerant reptiles near my house as opposed to driving and not finding much out and about. Herping around town has allowed me to finally find Charina in Washington County Or, Beaverton to be exact and added another close by location for Northern Gators.

The park next to my house is loaded with Thamnophis. I think its funny how there can be a plethora of good spots all around and they chose to pile into one area. I do notice slight twitching motions not unlike pythons incubating eggs. I also have temped the piles consistently 5-10 warmer than those basking alone.

They do kinda look like poop snakes but I think they're cool. Cool sunny days equals good Charina weather. In a couple hours we found 4 Boas, 2/3 Garters, 5 or 6 Scelops and a MONSTER of a Southern Alligator lizard. Raining off and on and only high 50's.

Got out of the car and one of the first rocks produced this little girl, I always love it when you find what your looking for right away. Everything after that is just bonus!

Right afterwards my friend flips another, 2 within 10 minutes! We left that area and went on to the next, up a pretty steep logging road we stop at a fallen 4x8 sign and find thee biggest Southern Alligator lizard I have ever seen. I was a little surprised to find a Southern here, Northerns are more common.
Its funny how much attitude these guys throw.

The last snakes of the day were flipped together, two fatty female boas. These guys always throw their tails over their heads, no wonder they're so beat.

Our zoo has 3 rubber boas; I've been very surprised by how much I like them. Much more interesting than I would have thought. Cool finds...alligator lizards are on my life list I just live in the entirely wrong area for them.

Awesome pics. Looks like you've found a great spot for rubbers and alligators. How far out of Portland were you?

Crappy picture of a cool lizard - A split-tailed alligator from a few years ago. Looks like a abberant re-growth.

The second spot was about 30 minutes outside Portland, the First spot is 15 minutes out of Downtown..

I've seen one Gator with a split tail and one Scelops, pretty freaky.
