Largest Mangrove Monitor Seen?

thebigsquease May 24, 2010 01:37 PM

I wanted to ask, "What is the largest Mangrove have you seen?"
Not that I've seen hundreds... but I've seen quite a few over the years, and none has been as large as this monster.
I got it about 3 years ago, and it's never stopped growing.
Currently he's at 53 1/2"!
Eating everything from moon crabs, crab meat, Pan Fish and adult Rats. He'll even eat pizza and French Fries! Not that I allow that to happen much.

Just curious... any out there larger??

Here are a few pics. Sorry about the model.... we were taking pics to post ads, and "Dino" is such a ham, he wanted in on the action.....

Please let me know your thoughts...

Head Shot:

Full on Body Shot:

And just for fun, He is so curious about everything that goes on:

I'll sit this up.... We were photographing frogs, and one jumped and hopped into a empty Vision Cage. Shana was more then happy to crawl in after it.... She no sooner got in, and here came Dino racing up to see what all the fuzz was about....

What is the exact length of that mangrove in the picture? It appears to be almost water monitor size. I always thought of mangroves as sort of medium sized.

I know with the bass we have a subspecies of largemouth that gets twice or three times as big as the regular large mouth bass. It could be something like that.

There is a guy on repticzone by the name of Jimjum12 with a Mangrove that was at 54" as of Dec 09'.

I know a guy who lives in Kissimmee Fl. who's dad was stationed in Guam with the Marines back in the 50's or 60's. His dad got bitten by a mangrove monitor that had gotten in their tool shed and was hiding somewhere his dad was reaching.
Anyway the dad killed it and had it taxidermied. The son who is into reptiles still has the stuffed mangrove. It is at or just under 5ft. I can't remember exactly but I have seen it. The thing is it was about 6 inches longer as the end of the tail broke off over the years.
According to both him and his dad this one was a small one compared to others they routinely saw back then. I am thinking they must have gotten a bit bigger back then than they do now.
