Always sex your snakes!!

RockinReptiles2 May 24, 2010 02:07 PM

Long story short I picked up a proven breeder male ghost from what I thought was a legit breeder. Dealt with him in the past no problems.
The male did not breed any of the 5 females I had for him. Put in a male pied to stir him up. Came back later to find the male pied breeding the ghost. I figured it happens. So I probed the ghost and it was a female but she was really tense I thought i probed wrong. This morning the "male" proven breeder laid 1 egg and 2 slugs.
it was sold to me as a Proven breeder CH male. That the breeder had since it was a baby. But when I e-mailed him that the snake was a female he said the breeder he got it from sent him the wrong sex. And said I should be happy since females are worth more. But with my hets I would of made more if it was a male. Now those projects are behind a year. I am still out of a male ghost and wasted all the time trying to get a female to breed. Be sure to always check your snakes no matter who you get them from. Most good breeders would make it right, time to redo my ghost projects.
Good luck to everyone this season.

Amen! Happened to me TWICE this year! I assumed they were correct! You know what they say when you "assume"!

In the early 90's I used to get colubrids sexed by friends who claimed to know how. Almost every single time years later I found they where wrong. You would think they would be right at least 50% of the time!

So finally a few years into hatching ball pythons I get my nerve up to start popping. I think I've got it down for popping nice fat hydrated babies right out of the egg. Heck, while washing them off they almost pop themselves. Of course now I'm going to start needing reading glasses to see ...

But older males I'm still not willing to push hard enough to pop. This year I had two dinker project "girls" that came into my collection a little older that I had been raising up for years and having trouble getting to breeding size. That should have been my first indication right there. Both showed themselves to be males by load combat with the mojave male I was trying to breed them too. If I had known they where male I could have breed them years ago when a new morph was worth something!
