dmlove Sep 22, 2003 06:11 PM

i have 2 females and a male and one too small to tell, in a large outdoor enclosure. It is realativly cool outside, maybe 68-70, and i saw them mating. Is this normal at this time of the year? if so, when will she lay? thanks

Yes, its normal, but she probably won't lay the eggs until next spring/summer.

It is very normal for box turtles to mate from spring into fall, they do not, however, lay eggs in the winter, and I would not avoid hibernating simply because you see them mating in the fall. Mine have been very "active" lately and they always are this time of year, and they always hibernate. The ovulation cycle starts in late summer, preparing eggs for the FOLLOWING spring.

Both of my males have been out tracking down the girls - I call this fall mating rush their "Just in case mating ritual" - Just in case something happens during winter hibernation - their genes will still be passed on!!! Very normal behavior - in fact when I see the fall mating push - I know they are thinking about hibernation right around the corner.
