Old age in boas?

varanid May 25, 2010 04:12 PM

I have my Argentine Boa that's somewhere in the late teens years old (exact age not known). Yoda's my pride and joy, I got her in...probably 1996?? She wasn't a baby but wasn't nearly full grown either. One of my first snakes, my 2nd or 3rd exotic snake.
Anyway, she's started to slow down a little bit, noticeable starting...say, January or Feb? She's started skipping the odd meal. Also, muscle tone has *very* slightly decreased.
basically, I'm wondering if she's just getting old? Fecals and a vet didn't turn anything up disease/parasite wise...and if it is just age, should I change anything husbandry wise? I've upped the heat a bit cause she's on the warm side more than she used to be...

Every animal is different. I think mid to late teens is quite young for a boa to start showing its age. I would check fecals, cage environment, and food quality. I have a boa that is over 40 and is still strong, active, and healthy. I feed her once every three weeks to a month on a large rat and she is a ferocious feeder.

Here she is:

Nice snake.
I've been checking my parameters...I've actually got a new, larger cage ordered for her since she's a bit big for the vision she's in (getting a 6X2X2 AP for her, with shelf).
I've heard so many conflicting things on life span since I got these guys...20, 30, now 40. We'll have to see what happens.
Cage temps had remained fairly constant (high end in the mid 80s since BCO's like it cooler than BCC's I'v eheard, low end room temp, moderate humdity). I upped the warm end to upper 80s last month, and may up it again since she's still spending most of her time on the warm end.

I had been feeding every 2 weeks, may just drop it down to once a month or so...one-two XXL rats.
