A raccoon must have got this one

This was one of my 1st ever herping areas I'de go by myself when I was about 10. Its changed quite a bit over the years. Another depressing sight.

Great variety of wildlife out there. I love the painted turtles. Hard to find a location out here where they haven't been overtaken by sliders.

Andy, Do you ever see pond turtles?, I think thats what they're called.

I haven’t seen any Western Pond Turtles in a few years. I think the last time was when I was in school. 5 years ago or so down near Eugene, OR. Every turtle I see these days seems to be the non-native red-eared slider. It’s sad.

I looked up the pond turtle range, and this is what Wikipedia had to say. I live in the Puget sound area now. Funny coincidence.
“As of 2007, they have become rare or absent in the Puget Sound area. They have a disjunct distribution in most of the Northwest, and some isolated populations exist in southern Washington. Pond Turtles are now rare in the Willamette Valley north of Eugene, Oregon, but abundance increases south of that city where temperatures are higher.”

From last summer - All sliders…

Porky-pine! Dude I love those guys :D Haven't seen one here (though I know we have them) but I have seen them both in South Texas and in Colorado. They're so damn cute even with the prickly bits.

Do you usually find them in/near trees or out on open ground like that? I've found them in forest (2-3 times maybe?) up in colorado, and the one I found while in south texas was using a den up on a rock face in a forest and was a very unhappy camper...never seen one not someplace where it could go vertical, which is weird because looking at them they sure don't *look* like great climbers but oh well.

I find them in trees, forest floors, & prarie with rocks. I saw a small albino porcupine in a tree years ago on an island in the Missouri river, Too far away to get a good pic with the crappy throw away cameras I had back then.

Dan,

That's one friendly-looking racer!
Those painteds sure are colorful - more so than the Midland Painteds found around here.
But that pocupine was the "icing on the cake."

Nice post (yet again)!

Thanks Tim! Yea, I love finding the pocupines. I found a baby black one a few years ago on a day I didnt bring my camera, the thing was the size of a medium guinea pig & looked so soft.
