problem eating

herndonart May 26, 2010 01:08 PM

Hi, I have a albino corn, he is about 4 years old and has always been healthy. I have always fed him live rodents with no problems encountered until now.

For the last few months he has had a problem eating. I first tried a large mouse/small rat with no luck. Then about a month or so ago I tossed in a rat pup and he immediately ate it, a few days later another one with the same results.

I then tried a small mouse and although he immediately hit it and began to eat, he got to the front shoulders and regurgitated it. This has now happened three or four times with the exact same results i.e., he kills it and tries to eat but spits it out after getting down to the front shoulders or therebouts.

I plan to try another rat pup that I can leave in the cage over night to see if he consumes that, but in the interim wonder if anyone has run into this.

Thanks,

Art

Can you provide some info about your cage set-up? What size cage, how you heat, cool end/warm end temps, hides, substrate, etc.

Maybe a pic or two of the snake and set-up.

It is possible he is off feed because of the season. Many males this time of year are more interested in finding a mate, than a meal!

Kent,

Thanks for the reply. i am presently in Va now and the snake is home in Fl, so I cannot send a pic. He is in a 29 gal tank, heat pad on one end with a hide cave. I have nothing on the other end except a XL water dish that he likes to hide under. He is now outside all the time and the weather is 80-90 during the day and 60-70 at night.

He is still pretty active and cruises the area at different times. As I said, he ate the rat pups, but when he tries to eat a mouse, he gets it halfway and regurgitates it. That is what has me concerned. I'll try another rat pup and let you know what happens.

Thanks again,

Art
