Arroyo Canyon Tree Frog

granddl May 26, 2010 03:28 PM

I was out herping here in SoCal (Sisar Canyon (34⁰26'40.93"N 119⁰08'04.28"W)) on 5/8/2010 with my son and we came across these Arroyo Canyon Tree Frogs (Identified per local park sign). However, I can't seem find them in my National Audubon Society Field Guide. Closest thing is a canyon tree frog which doesn't come anywhere near my part of California. I was trying to attach a scientific name to them in my field collecting journal, but so far all I am able to put down is "Hyla * *"...any suggestions.

Hyla cadaverina... California Treefrog, well within your range. I have some Hyla species as pets, that is one well fed little bugger.

Thanks for the info. Here is a pic of the habitat I found them in and a California Sister Butterfly found that day too that I couldn't resist.

Try www.californiaherps.com/

I have found it to be a great resource when herping in California.

Here's a Canyon Treefrog that I found in Utah a couple years ago:

Thanks for the link...looks like it will prove very useful in my search for Zonatas and Cal Kings...haven't been fortunate enough to encounter either yet. Nice Hyla pic too.

Ditch the Audubon guide and get peterson's western guide...so much better particularly with sub species! The Audubon guide was good at one point perhaps but there's better field guides now (thank goodness!).
