"Deflated" 03 Peruvian Female Boa bf

0PARADOX0 May 26, 2010 06:34 PM

I hope this makes sense and, in advance, I would like to thank anyone who might be able to offer insight!!.. now to the issue.

I bought an 03 Peruvian female last year at a Repticon show from a breeder that told me the snake was from a friend he was helping out by selling and not his own snake. That she had been a pet,not a breeder( shes a virgin) and was housed alone in a Freedom Breeder type rack/drawer system. Right off the bat she had looked a little thin or "deflated" as my friend and I called her. The breeder acknowledged this and told me it was more than likely due to his friend going through a divorce and had probably missed a few feedings due to the drama in this man's life. This was the reason he needed to sell the snake in the first place. He asured me once I got her home, setup and started feeding her ,she'd plump right back up,no problem.

I took her home and put her in a 24x48 enclosure, alone. She hissed and pissed CONSTANTLY for the first 2 weeks she was here. The urine smelled terrible and was discoloured...like a minty greenish tint. I immediately called the breeder and told him I wanted a refund and didnt have the time nor paitience to heal his sick snake. He calmed me down and assured me this was due to her being from a rack system and that the ability to see more stuff now was spooking her. He told me to cover as much of her enclosure to keep out light and activity as to not spook her anymore and to change the substrate from paper to mulch, as the is what she was on. I made all of the changes.... since then , she has gotten better with the being spooked..to she starts to breath *excessively heavy* and rapid when she knows youre there..like she just sprinted a mile!!!??? the urination has ceased to smell and the color is now normal.

The problem that has existed and not gotten better tho is her physique... she looks "melted" ..like a normal snake would/should look like a rounded square , she looks like an oval on its side... like a deflated snake toy..I can send pics if requested.. I feed her a jumbo rat once every 2 weeks . She used to get one a week but she'd never be interested in the second one so I stopped wasting the money on it just going to waste. She will eat the jumbo every two weeks, but even that is difficult... she wont attack it.. you have to put it by her and leave for up to 2 hours before she will eat it, still not attacking it,just eatting slowly. None of my other snakes are like this?!?!These are prekilled rats im talking about and she has never had a live rat at my place!! She doesnt move around a lot at all and I dont think Ive actually witnessed her drinking water except for a few times. ... shes pretty lazy ..much lazier than a normal Columbian I have of the same age and size. I am worried that I am missing something here and I dont want any of my snakes to suffer from anything. I keep everything clean and feed when I should, keeping records of everything.

Another concern is that I put a male peruvian in with her for only a week and a half while I was making space for new enclosures and he has refused food ever since. He hasnt eatten in many months ...will snatch the rats,squeeze,sniff..then leave them. I have been waiting for a fecal sample from him to take to a vet but since it has been so long since he has eatten, he is not going to the bathroom... any suggestion? I know that when a male goes into breeding mode he can "shut down" but they have been in seperate enclosures for oer 7 months now and he still refuses to eat anything. He is 4 feet long and starting to get skinny and wot take a madium or small rat, live or prekilled. I wonder if he couldhave gotten something from the week and a half with the deflated girl??? I also own his sister which looks nothing like him as far as size goes, shes super healthy and pounding a large and medium rat every 2 weeks.

Sorry for the long email, just want to put as much info in here as possible so I can help you all help me and my snakes!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you and please ask for pics if you need!!!!! thank you all

Now I'm wondering why you would put a male in with a female that you know is sick and has had many issues? It is quite possible you got the male sick too. Some males after being with a female will be reluctant to feed. They go in "breeding" mode.

I realize that my original message was long and had a lot of information in it but I did not include every piece of info involved as well as I dont believe you clearly read everything I had written before you decided to condemn my actions. I am not a "breeder" nor have I owned snakes for decades, so my experience and info is quite limited. I had called the breeder I bought the girl from MANY times and gotten as much info as he was willing to give me. I was in contact with the local reptile specialty shop as to the situation with this particular snake since getting her. It should also mention, again, that MONTHS had past since this snake stopped the hissing and urinating the way she did when I first brought her home!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all of the books I have read and people I have talked to, I have NEVER found ANYTHING that says a hissing snake is a "sick" snake....so I dont see where you are even coming from by using that term??!?!?! As for the urinating...I stated in my first message.. I was told this was due to the change in habitat environments.....I switched everything back to what she was accustomed to,like I was suggested, and the urinating stopped and has NEVER returned!!!!! So, again.... this didnt and doesnt seem like signs of a "sick" snake!??!?!?!?!?!?! This information was added into the message to give the total history of the snake in hopes it may help in some idea of what would cause her physique to look the way it does.....THAT WAS MY ONLY QUESTION WHEN IT COMES TO HER!! The male snake was put with her 6 months AFTER the hissing and urinating STOPPED and was ( as previously stated) only for a few days while I detup new enclosures....YES,IN HINDSIGHT I SEE WHERE THIS WAS A BAD IDEA....but like I said, im still new to owning snakes and was assured by the local reptile shop that by this time the two together was ok if for a short time. In all actuality, the male shutting himself down seems to be the most likely reason he stopped eatting....I should have reworded my quesion about him and just asked how long is "common" for a snake to shut down even if not put together with a female. To be honest, I wanted to write a seperate question on him in the forum but felt it'd just be faster to put it all in one message....again, my fault!!!!!!

With all of that said...... I dont think its fair to not read everything in someone's post and then only respond with your "Why would you do that,I never would have done that" attitude. I posted to ask for HELP , not attitude. You could have made some suggestion as to why she looks the way she does that would of actually gave some insight into the situation. Maybe I'm mistaking your response, but I really domt believe I am. Not everyone on here is a breeder with years and years of experience with snakes. Everyone starts somewhere and we ALL have learned from our mistakes as well as the mistakes of others!!!! This includes YOU TOO!!!! keep that in mind.

thank you

I realize I probably put too much info into the original message and maybe clouded the original focus.

Why on Earth would you expose one of your other snakes to this one, with it in such questionable health...and without a proper quarantine period????

this could be one of many things...... viral, parasitic, bacterial just to start with..... could be having a systemic failure..... it's really hard to diagnose something like this over the internet...... get the snake to a good vet... and quarantine it............. If the other one that was exposed is also ill now.... quarantine it as well......

PS.... I have a few BCC that dont like being tong fed..... it's completely OK..... for some reason they dont feel secure enough to eat with any commotion going on around..... I lay the prey in the cage... and it's always gone when I come back in

WOW. I really dont know where to start on the "responses" that Ive received on my first post on this forum... I really have to question if owning a boa constrictor or many of them has really gotten to the point that there are an ELITIST group of owners of these animals?!?!!? I also question if the majority of the people who responded to my post ACTUALLY READ THE WHOLE DAMN THING OR MY SECOND POST ?!?!?!?!?!??!
Who the hell said that these animals were not quarantined?!?!?!? I NEVER DID!!!! WTF are you talking about?!?!?!? Where do you even come up with that idea??? ALL of the animals I own have been quarantined for a MINIMUM of 8 months before ever coming in contact with another one!!! So, if you dont know what they hell you are talking about , dont make stuff up!!!!!!!!
Secondly, i did take the snake to a good vet ( tho im sure the way SOME of you are, NO vet would ever be good enough for you!!!) ...and I was told after doing a physical / visual test as well and fecal that the ONLY ISSUE the snake has is that she is...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SKINNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHE IS NOT DEHYDRATED,SHE IS NOT SICK,SHE IS NOT DYING, SHE IS ONLY SLIGHTLY UNDERWEIGHT - resulting in a "flabby " appearance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was told to up her food/ calorie intake to bulk her back up. THATS IT!!! I was NOT told to change ANYTHING ELSE AT ALL....everything else I was doing was GREAT , I just needed to break the plateau of calories I was giving her. I was asked if she had ever dropped a clutch ..which I was told she was a virgin.. and that she looked like she had and just not put the weight back on. Since I did NOT raise her , I did not have the chance to see her growth through the years or when she started to thin out...As I stated in my first post.
It really is quite bullsh*t that people have no problem passing judgement and playing holier than thou yet NOT A SINGLE PERSON ASKED TO SEE A SINGLE PICTURE before giving me their "opinion" on this!!

It really has been an eyeopening experience to participate in this forum. Obviously, I have learned my lesson and wont come here for "help" again. I know enough herp people that I should have just relied on that group alone IN THE FIRST PLACE. Its truly sad that a "regular" person who happens to own snakes, no matter what genetics they are, cant come to a forum to ask a question about an animal they are obviously concerned about and not just get HELP!! Not off-based , delusional opinions. Not ridiculed for practices that NEVER EVEN TOOK PLACE!! NOT BE SUBJECTED TO ELITIST ATTITUDE from someone that doesnt even ask questions to help figure out the problem, instead just spews how they are sooooo much better than you are , how THEY would never do what you did!!!!! .... WTF?!
not everyone on here has tens of thousands of dollars in snakes, not everyone has a "facility",not everyone is a "breeder", not everyone has been doing this for as long as I have been alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I realize not everyone who posts on here falls into any of the categories that I have described. Honestly, most of us fall into the "not" category!! And I am only responding to the people who responded with such ignorance to my original post!!! JUST TO BE CLEAR ON THAT!!!!!
I rarely, if ever, even get on this forum to read posts, and as I said , this was my first post... but I logged on today to respond to this thread once and for all and,in the process, happen to see the comments about the Omaha man killed by his boa..some of them by the SAME IDIOTS who posted to my(this) thread !!! Reading them commenting on the dead guys former job at McDonalds... as if THAT contributed to this guys death. He just died and you bash his job yet would have sold YOUR own snakes to him just as easily... again,WOW... hypocritical elitist attitude. HOW PATHETIC!
AS I SAID...WHAT AN EYEOPENING EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
