What's a Good size for Breeding Rats???

batdad Sep 22, 2003 07:46 PM

I know that three to four months is a good age to start breeding rats but I have a young one and don't know the age. So what would be a good weight to let her get to before breeding her.

Thanks
Bruce

I am not the most experienced. However, when I bred my 10 week old 250 gram females, I got good results. There was three females involved.

The largest female had sixteen babies (Yes! sixteen!)

The second lagest female (which belongs actually to my neighbor) had twelve babies.

The runt of the group had six females.

All the the above three females were born of the same mom. They were all the same age and had minor differences in weight. They were all in the neighborhood of the 250 grams. Therefore, I think 250 is good. I think if I had waited until 275 grams, I would have had more production out of them. At the very least, the runt female should have gotten more time before she was bred.

They all have turned out to be good moms. The babies are growing well (except for one that died on day 3).

cheers.
