Western Hognose Temperatures (cold/hot)

CremeDeLaCresteds May 27, 2010 09:23 PM

Hi guys,
My names Johnny, nice to meet you all. I had a question, what temps do you guys keep your hognoses at? I keep my tubs @ 78-81F on the cool side and 88-92F on the hotside. I've noticed a better feeding response when kept at these temps. Anybody care to share? I'd appreciate it and thanks in advance!

Hey Johnny,
Welcome to the hog forum... There is a ton of great info to get got here...

What has been working great for me is NOT keeping hogs like most colubrids... Hogs like it hot and dry...

My rack is set with a 92 degree hot spot and may go as high as 94 on hot days... The cool side never drops below 80 but has not gone past 82... They constantly utilize the hot area and I have not had one hog slow down on feeding... In fact all the hogs I kept awake this past winter fed every time food was offered...

With the higher temps you will also see that your hogs will metabolize their intake faster... Frequent, small meals is the way to go with hogs in my opinion...

The hotter hot spots also keep the snakes more active because they are not sitting in one spot all day trying to get their core temps up... Heating up fast allows them to move on and hunt and do whatever hog like to do... LOL

Haha,
Thank you for the welcome and info. I agree that keeping them a little hotter than most colubrids helps with metabolism. I hope to post some pics as well. Keep em' coming!
