HELP, New with snakes, CalKing starter

VHLeo May 28, 2010 03:42 PM

Hi there ,

I've loved snakes most of my life, as long as I can really remember. But for one reason or another I haven't been able to own more than one little Garter snake that my Dad caught for me when I was little. Now I'm at the point where I will be able to finally have a pet snake .

Firstly, I live in Washington State and am wondering if there are any conventions in the Seattle area for reptiles that I could attend? I would like to buy my first snake from a Breeder and I'd like to see the snake in person and ask questions rather than just getting on shipped in.

Secondly, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Californa Kingsnake. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about how much a setup will cost, food costs, and any handy information that I should know. I'll be posting this message in a few of the forum threads here as well.

I thank you in advance for your help!

No need to spend a bunch of money but there are some things you will definetly need and some important things to know.

1) buy an undertank heater. Pet shops carry the zoo med brand for $12.

2) you can pick up used aquariums at yardsales. get a new screen lid (designed for repttiles) from a pet shop. Make sure it fits tight.

3)Buy aspen or pine shavings for bedding.DO NOT BUY CEDAR! best deals are from horse supPly stores or farm equipent supply stores. You can get a bail for $7. and that will last a long time. Otherwise you will be spending big bucks just to change the shavings.

4) you can just use an old bowl from your cuboard as a water dish. A snake does not know or care if it is drinking out of a cereal bowl or a doggy bowl.

5) Don't use overhead lighting. This will dry the snake out. Snakes need humidity. Dehydration is the most common ailment in captive reptiles.

6)The size of the tank depends on the size of the calif king you are getting. if you are not getting an adult then don't place him in a large 10-20 gallon tank. Get one of those plastic shoeboxes from Walmart or supermarket. Make sure it has a tight snap on lid. For airholes..Burning holes in it works better then drilling holes. Drilling tends to crack the plastic. I just heat a fork on the oven and melt through the plastic.

7) Place the heat pad on one end of the encloser so the snake can CHOOSE hot or cold.

8) really any type of encloser will work as long as it is escape proof. Most herpers use the sterlite or rubbermaid boxes which range in size from shoebox on up to sweater boxes. A large 4-5 ft Cal king needs a sweater box size.

10) Mice are usually purcahsed frozen from suppliers who advertise here on KS. i reccomend www.Rodentpro.com

use the search function here on this forum and read up a bit before asking questions.

You can check in the EVENT section of this site. Look at the tab at the top of this page. As for set up it depends on you and who you talk to. It can be as simple as a Rubbermaid tub with air holes or as extravigant as a walk in enclosier. A twenty gallon long Fish Tank with a secure lid is good for a Cal king. Make sure you get a secure metal frame tight fitting lid. Most escapes happen from those cheap screen tops sold in pet shops even the ones made for reptiles. Snakes can squeeze thru the smallest crack. Do yourself a favor and pick up a Kingsnake book their care is pretty straight forward but read up on as much as you can. Good Luck!

Like a153fish said, check the "event" section of the home page of kingsnake.com. I know there are reptile show in the SeaTac area.

Some of the vendors sell cages at a discount at the shows. I like the glass cages with screen lids that slide into place and lock. For someone with just a few snakes, they are nice for visibility.

The shows are also fun to see whats available (besides Cal Kings), and you will find its hard to walk away with buying something. Thats why I limit myself to one or two shows a year!

I got this girl at the Portland Reptile Expo last August.

Thanks. I like her too. I hope that my male will be big enough next year to breed with her.

A153fish, did you read my latest post on the cornsnake forum? Still not sure how its going to pan out with my cornsnake girl. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm a seasoned veteran of snakes in general, and of Cal Kings in particular. I recently did an experiment with a Black Milk Snake and a Texas Rat Snake, only to discover that my Cal Kings had all the desired traits I like most:

1. active & curious, explores the terrarium fairly often
2. calm & confident during handling
3. eats regularly, no special feed preference

Of all the snakes I've kept across the years, Cal Kings have been my most predictable & successful. I'm EXTREMELY pleased with my two.

I can give you many tips, if you'd like. Below is a Flickr link showing my female Cal King, and her naturalistic, 60-gallon biome. (Send a private message if you'd like, and we can connect via e-mail.)

Firstly thank you everyone so much for all your feedback . I found a convention that'll be in Seattle next month so I'm going to try to attend. Again thank you so much for all your advice and willingness to let me know the basics .

If you decide to go for a fish aquarium with a screen lid, I would recommend purchasing clips to secure it.

Just so you know, when you get your snake, you have to post pics...Or we'll find you...

P.S. Ameron2010, that setup is AMAZING! That's a very handsome snake you have as well.
