One More Western Ribbon Diet Question.

rukind24 Sep 22, 2003 08:21 PM

Thanks for the responses regarding diet requirements.
To further probe about the problems with a rosy-only diet... are there other fish that are considered 'better' nutritionally? I am going to attempt to introduce worms as a suppliment.. but my question is how much and how often?

So, just to recap my "one more" question, which apparently is two

1. Are there other fish that are better than Rosy's to feed?
2. Worms - how many? how often?

Thanks in advance!

My experience suggests that ribbons, unlike garters, generally are not fond of worms - period. So you may not have much luck at all with worms.

When I had ribbons, their preference was tadpoles. Adults love those big ones that probably would have been destined to become Bullfrogs. They like tadpoles and small frogs, also alamanders. But as has been pointed out in other posts on this forum, there is an increased risk of parasites with wild-caught amphibians.

As for fish, I've had reasonable luck in the past just with minnows obtained at the local bait/tackle shop. I don't even know what kind of fish they are (were). Others may be able to comment on the benefits or disadvantages of going this route, or may have other recommendations on more nutritious varieties.

I have switched my Ribbon from goldfish to scented pinkies (previously frozen). It takes scented pinkies without hesitation. I plan to stick with the pinkies for awhile but maybe add some fish. I will watch the animals health and weight and see how it goes. Other species of Thamnophis have done excellent on a diet of pinkies. Something to consider.
