Mexican bairdi availability

Astourna May 29, 2010 03:21 AM

The more I get to looking at my mexican baird's and how beautiful he is already, the more I wonder about getting him a girlfriend some day. The person who originally bred him told me the name of the website she got her pair from, but it seems the owner has dropped off the radar. So I'm looking to see if anyone knows of someone who breeds the mexican variety.

He's a photo just for the sake of showing him off some more

I feel pretty bad about originally thinking he was a girl. Looks like I definitely owe him a girlfriend lol.

How old is he? At what age did he start showing his colour variance?

Astourna May 29, 2010 05:56 PM

He'll be a year old in June. He started to get yellow at around 3 months old. I don't know if he's from a specific locality or anything like that. I tried asking the breeder about that, which is when we found out the person she got her pair from doesn't seem to be available anymore.

I bought a pair of "Mexican" Bairds from Sunshine serpents in 08, they were 3 times the price of normal Bairds and so far, they still look like normal bairds.
Alan Kardon used to breed Mexicans, I should have gone to him.
Maybe you could give him a try.

Short of contacting the San Antonio zoo itself, I'm not sure how to contact him. Besides that, I've also learned that legally collecting herps from Mexico is next to impossible. So that leads me to wonder if the Mexican bairdi that are here originate from a very small original stock of imported animals before those laws, or if some of them were imported illegally. Hmm.

hmmm.....they are a great animal.....often with animals like these mexican bairds....the closer to the border (US)...the more they will resemble the texan bairds.....so you need to see the parents of your snakes....i'm sure that david would send pics of the adults....just ask...also, there maybe captive crosses out there being peddled as pure mexicans....so...buyer be aware....yo

Yes, the Mexican bairdi come from a small gene pool, but are legal. I got one of mine from Dusty Rhoads and one from the zoo stock. Todd Hughes is breeding at least one pair. Mine are only two yrs old, so won't reproduce this year.

PS: Bob is correct about "impure" crosses out there...

I also purchased a PAIR of those "Mexican" Bairdi from Sunshine Serpents last year. It was total BULL$H&&!!! I have REAL Mexican bairdi also... the ones from Sunshine Serpents are mexican/texas crosses AT BEST... I finally got rid of mine... I even saw Sunshine serpents at Daytona this year and told him that I was displeased with the animals I got AND they were NOT mexicans... all I got was a few mumbled words and a shoulder shrug.

There's a guy (school teacher) out of North Carolina (I believe...).. he has a BLOG and not really a website. Scott John reptiles..St John reptiles or something like that. I purchased some of his mexican bairdi and they are turning out NICE... Solid grey heads...yellowish/orange bodies...

WOW.....tell us how you really feel....ha...that's too bad....i know david and i'm really surprised...

LOL- sorry 'bout that... I didn't mean to come off sounding like that. It's just sad to purchase a pair of animals and pay shipping costs these days- then raise 'em/feed 'em and have them turn out to be something they AREN'T...

The funny thing is that this is my first snake, and HE was sold to me as a FEMALE TEXAN by a reseller at the San Diego show (who will not be named unless you ask) that didn't give a rat's ass about him. I'm sure they wanted me to buy one of the $100 corn snake morphs they had on the table instead of the little gray $45 snake. The guy gave me a whole bunch of attitude about wanting a Baird's. That's the first and last time I'll buy anything from them even if they have nice stuff at the show this year. Attitudes and bad record keeping pisses me off!

And to think I was slightly disappointed when I realized he wasn't a Texan. Sometimes I like the way things work out.
