Scarlet Kings: 38 eggs

Oxyrhopus May 29, 2010 08:39 PM

These 2 from a few posts down dropped 9 each this morning in separate housings at around the same time at 8 AM and have 20 eggs already incubating so it's a great start this year for scarlet kings.

Congrats Dan....
What's your trick to getting 38 hatchling Scarlet kings to feed?
Do you ever get them on f/t pinks or do you allow them to eat skinks and such as the main part of their diet?

Assist feeding mouse legs/tails a few times and then scenting day-old pinks or pink heads with an anole works well.

Wow, Dan, you have your work cut out for you! How small are those eggs? One of the scarlets I caught in my woods was pretty small. I guess it could have eaten day old pinks.

Well half are spoken for and the other half will hopefully be spoken for before they all hatch so my work will be sending them out. And yea, I've had 6 inchers eat hour-old pinks.

Dan, you're actually able to get them over to eating pinks steady?

Oxyrhopus May 30, 2010 04:38 PM

Sure, just never give them lizards and they will always eat rodents. If you give lizards then then they hold out for more so never give them when a mouse leg is easy to do. I sometimes but rarely use a mash mix of grinded lizard to send defrosted pinks and it work usually all of the time. Live pinks scare em.

I have a scarlet I found in my back yard last October. It ate a thawed anole, followed by a thawed pink, right off the bat. I fed it that way twice, then straight pinks. Now it eats two thawed fuzzies each week. I thought it was hard to get them on mice, too, but apparently not.

For some reason I thought I remembered reading years ago that the only folks that kept them alive were folks that managed to feed them some sort of egg concoction and that inducing them to even do that was not easy. They sure are little jewels! I wish you the best. May have to think about them some day LOL. And here I am trying to have discipline and not increase the size of my collection.

That's the scarlet snake that eats reptile eggs which is a different species than the scarlet king. Regardless, some scarlet snakes can be condition to eat egg coated pinks and eventually unscented rinsed pinks.

I collect 20 - 30 scarlet kings every year, this year 42, all 42 ate anoles and pinkies right out of the woods and the 15 I have left, six months later are still eager eaters of both. you have inspired me too, as I end up with many eggs too, but I usually release my hatched juvies, maybe next year I'll give it a try.
