alright, well im not new to reptiles, usually stick with the lizards and monitor lizards but never snakes, so this is the first one, well im at a reptile show in my area, and i see these snakes there, there pretty cool, the guy says there rarley aggresive, dont need any special heating or lighting, there very docile, and well, made them sound like some no worry species, so i pick up 2 of these guys,

after talking to a few people few days ago, i came to the conclusion that well... they need a repti-sun 5.0 bulb, and after having them for a bit... well... there not to docile either lol,

i picked up 2, one with a white belly, and one with a reeeally solid yellow, well the white one is pretty nice, he just slithers around, like when i took him out to put him in the tank, but the yellow one, well, he started thrashing like mad and now is a very aggresive bugger, i had to move him a little bit to clean the water bowl and he started jumping (you know what i mean lol) and reaching around the tank and even tried biting me a few times in that process, lets just say it wasent a pretty sight, well, i got my hand out of there pretty fast!

so currently there in about a inch of top soil with grass seeds and a water bowl for them (oh and the white one proccedded to drink when i put him in, the yellow one thrashed and dug himself underground and pretty much stayes there all the time) im in the process of finding some sticks and all for some climbing and hiding here and there

so i know you all can give care sheets and all, but i want some real opinions and answers, will he ever calm down to a point where he will actually trust me a little bit? cause i can approch the tank and hell curl up and hiss, or are snakes like non attitude turning,

well... any advice on these guys will be great, threw the day it gets to a max of like 74, so im not to sure if i should get a heat pad or not, dont want to cook em

and last thing... does it hurt when they bite? cause i dont exactly want to find out the hard way... there about a 1.5 feet at the moment, so...

well thanks alot to anyone who can say anything

Hahahaha. Trust me it won't hurt as bad as your monitors. No, it doesn't hurt at all. You won't feel a thing. And yes, it should calm down eventually. But it might not. Good luck, and don't be afraid to get bit. As soon as you do you'll laugh at yourself for ever being afraid of it.

"...i can approch the tank and hell curl up and hiss..."

A Rough Green snake hiss??? Never heard of that. In fact, most rough greens I've dealt with are so docile that you can hardly get them to even try to bite. They tend to be nervous as captives, often prowling actively and perhaps darting toward a fast exit as soon as the lid is off, but I'd hardly characterize them as aggressive. Newborns and juveniles can be a little ornery, but I'm wondering if what you have are really Rough Green snakes?!

lol, well im glad it wont hurt

and ya, im pretty sure, there markings are the same as the rough, so... ya... thre rough green snakes the one with the white belly is prety docile, hes getting better, but the one with the yellow is still... well... up in heaven thinking his god lol, guess i gota be the special one who has the aggresive one out of a pile of dociles... *sigh*... why does it always end up like that lol

You are going to find that you can't really keep Rough Greens together. One becomes more dominant and the other stops eating. They are also not really snakes to be handled. They are more for display. They are shy, nervous and stress way to easy for handling other than cleaning the cages.

You will need to mist the cage daily. Feed them daily (they eat alot) and give them UV lights (which you have). They need a lot of hiding and climbing spaces, live plants work well. They provide cover and help keep the humidity up.

I have to agree that you might want to double check and make sure that what you have is a rough green, they are not known to be aggressive or hissy snakes.

ok, this was my first snake. I think that they're awesome because they're tiny, beautiful, and eat crikets (which is sooo much cheaper than mice). For me, the most important part was humidity. I live in the desert and I was constantly spraying down that cage. So, that's my advice, have fun, I never got bit, but I can't imagine that you would feel more than a pinch.

happy herping!

if its one thing im sure about on these snakes, its the fact that its a rough green snake lol,

so.. what should i do about the heat? some say put a heat bulb in... but wont that over heat them? it gets to about a max of 75 there through the day, i ws hopping to raise it a bit but without burning them :P

and thanks for the humidity tips, any suggestions at what the humidity should be at about?
