a couple emoryis

draybar May 31, 2010 11:13 AM

two of my male emoryi rat snakes
the one in my hand is het albino and was bred to one of my female emoryis het for albino. They are the pair that have have given me four albinos in two seasons so far.(including the one pictured). Two a season. They only average about 6 eggs so those aren't bad numbers. Maybe this season will see a couple more. I am still waiting for the female to lay. I am only breeding this one pair. The emoryis are hard to get rid of. Don't know why, they are great snakes. Pictures don't do them justice. Anyone who works with them knows they have a look, in-hand, that is very very hard to capture with the camera.
sorry to ramble

absolutely.....these are one of the most unappreciated snakes out there.....kinda like the fox snake.....great animals to work with......

ratsnakehaven Jun 01, 2010 11:14 AM

Great snakes, even better than fox snakes, since they have a short brumation period and aren't as bulky. I like them because of the huge variability too, and keep many localities.

PS: Jimmy, will contact you for an albino later. Thanks...

Terry

The normals remind me of some Eastern Milks a friend of mine catches in North Carolina. The albino is very pretty also!Don't they use these to get one of the Corn morphs? I forget which one, butter maybe? I can't remember.

wow

I wouldn't mind getting that blood in my bairdis
But, no cash for buying snakes at this time...bummer

common emoryi rat/corn snake crosses:
emoryi/corn expressing amelanism: creamsicles
emoryi/corn wild type or normals: rootbeers
emoryi/corn expressing hypomelanism: cinnamons
emoryi/corn expressing amelanism and anerythrism (snow): snowsicles
there are more, most don't have names..
a lot of people don't like any of the names.
a lot of people hate the mixes all together.
to each his own

Snakes, as they are protected in many states. This means you have to have a permitt to own, breed, and/or sell them. Not only that, but any one that you sell them to also has to have a permit. It makes things "tedious". If not for this fact I think they ould be substantially more popular.

In Texas, they are not protected per se, but in order to legally sell them (or any native Texas snake) to the public, you have to have a dealer's permit.

marketing.....like the redrat snake, albino burm, ball python, boa, & hondo type hype that the herpmarket was subjected to, this resulted in some decent profit margins for breeders/investors/brokers........now there's seems to be a BIG push for the western hognose snake morphmarket(i think they maybe protected in at least one state),but....i donno if the economy will allow the same type of speculation as it did several years ago, ....but wadda i know...just the thoughts of an old dude...

I think they would be a bit more popular if breeders actually produced them. For instance, I would keep some "localities" from such places as Illinois, if someone had legal stock to sell. I'm a locality breeder. It's sort of a catch-22, because these snakes aren't that colorful, much of the main stream comsumers opt for corn snakes instead. It's always been that way. But some of us are working on changing that. Right now it's the locality folks and the ones interested in the species for its special characteristics that have the most interest. That may change someday, so don't give up on them.

PS: If you live in a state that "lists" its Emory's ratsnakes, you may be able to keep Emory's from another state, or another subspecies, which can be easily recognizeable. Ask your local wildlife officials if that's possible or if you can get a permit to keep them.

Cheers...TC

is that intermontna thangie considered an emory's????......yeh i'm really OLD!!!!!!!

ratsnakehaven Jun 03, 2010 12:57 PM

>>is that intermontna thangie considered an emory's????......yeh i'm really OLD!!!!!!!

Heck, ya! Here's a couple showing some variability just in the intermontanus...

A fairly normal darker one

A very light colored one from another county.

Pantherophis emoryi intermontanus is one of my favorites, because there's much variability from just this one form of the subspecies, and because they are the smallest of the Emory's ratsnakes...

PS: Some folks don't recognize "intermontanus" as a subspecies, but just a local variation of P. emoryi.

thought it mighta been elevated to full species....

ratsnakehaven Jun 03, 2010 01:49 PM

>>thought it mighta been elevated to full species....

Nope, just another Emory's...

If you make it out to West TX this summer, there's another form near Alpine that's somewhat of an intergrade bt. P. e. emoryi and P. e. meahllmorum, but is almost a separate subspecies. The West Texas Emory's ratsnake is pretty cool too. Get some pics if you see any, or collect one for me...haha!

Cheers...Terry
