Incubator Questions

JMo May 31, 2010 11:32 AM

I'm expecting two clutches soon (first time); POS shed for both my females was on 5/20/10.

1. - When should I expect the eggs?
2. - I have had the incubator set up for about a month now with the egg containers inside (no substrate); temps are stable. Should I put the substrate in the egg containers now ahead of the eggs so it can acclimate to the temps or should I put the substrate in when the eggs come?

Thanks for any replies,
Jim

I would definitely put the substrate in. It's good to have it the right temp beforehand.

If you put your mixed substrate in the incubator, be certain that you have a lid or glass top to the container. You should not have holes in the box. The moment you put it in the incubator with a loose top or with holes in the box, it will begin to dry out from the heat.

I mix up a bunch of substrate and place into one big shipping styro insert and place it in the bottom of the incubator with a pane of glass over it. I know very little of the moisture is evaporated because the glass is nearly air tight. I would never put it in the 89 degree incubator in a box with holes because it would get too dry too soon before placing eggs in that box.
