this weekend

varanid May 31, 2010 03:11 PM

broke my unlucky streak.
Saturday, I saw a handful of neroida, and dunked my camera. Went home, opened it up and let it dry. it worked sunday and today (YAY!

Sunday, went on a walk in the morning and saw this:

2-3 foot, probably in shed.

Today, went for a walk and saw this: I think a coachwhip but maybe a racer?? Leaning toward coachwhip but didn't see the anal plate or count scales

there was a racerunner there but didn't capture it

Coachwhip, I believe. I only got Roadkills this AM, including a baby Copperhead . Ignorant people, it was in the woods & not a threat. Unless a Shrike got it, but that I doubt..

Ouch. I hate finding DOR's

The coachwhip was pure dumb luck; I was done with the hike. We'd seen lizards and stuff but no snakes. I hadn't really expected any but I brought a camera along for flowers (prickly pear is blooming). We were on the concrete walking path at the entery point to the park, before the trailhead, and she darted across the path and up a tree. I'd guesstimate length at 4' but I'd have never seen it if it'd stayed still.

Oh, here's some flowers just cause so much easier to photograph than animals. I suck as a naturalist, couldn't tell you the species on most of them...but they're pretty!

Yeah, I left my camera at home today. And saw a nice Texas Rat, but I think I have him already in Memory. Seem to find this guy frequently in his home turf. I didn't think I'd see anything, since it was about 96 degrees F. out there..

Awesome looking bullsnake...looks almost hypomelanistic! Good pics. As far as the other snake goes...my vote is for coachwhip.

yeah. There's not a lot there for size comparison. I toyed with trying to like put my foot in there to give a reference...but I didn't. It was a stout little bugger. If it wasn't on a preserve I may have kept it.
