breeding kingsnakes

texasviper619 May 31, 2010 06:39 PM

Im new to breeding kingsnakes but I am fascinated by all the varieties. I am starting to get quite a collection of snakes but only had my first clutch this year. Is there enough money in selling hatchlings to cover the cost of mice through the year? I am not too interested in profit, just propagation. To what scale would an operation have to be just to break even? Thanks

It all depends on what the cost of the kingsnakes you are breeding. The more expensive (or less common)kingsnake will give better returns than say a king that produces $25-$50. kingsnakes.

By getting into higher end kingsnakes, a profitable return is easier than trying to produce a hundred cheap ones. Also less food and other expenses is required for a higher end kingsnake since you don't need as many.

Another thing to factor in as well which is the difficulty of selling a lower end king (that is more common in the market). More work trying to move the animals, cost of advertising, feeding neonates etc.

It helps if you breed your own mice. Yet Rainer is right, if you breed the more common kings than you will be faced with competition from every kid who got a pair from the reptile shows. I have a few of the cheaper ones just cause I like them. I don't plan on making any money on them really. As my collection grows I will have to be more and more selective on what I keep, lol.
