Field find, 5/29/2010

varanid May 31, 2010 08:03 PM

2-3 foot, in shed. Found at approx. 11am Saturday on a nature trail. Looked like it was in shed, very hissy. Also seemed like it'd be a real looker after it shed.

Obsoleta are one of the three most common snakes here, after ringnecks and garters. And one of my favorites, they really tend to be docile. My list would probably go like this:

rubber boa
fox snake (E. vulpina)
black tailed rattlesnake
Yellow Ratsnake
Bull snake
Trans Pecos ratsnake
Red Milksnake
Indigo
Eastern Chainking
any mountain king...................

Did you keep it?
The markings on its head look like the ones on my male bull, with the v shaped spots on the middle of the head.

It was on a preserve, so no. Most of what I do is on protected lands, so I can't flip boards, rocks, etc or keep what I find, which is OK enough by me.
