I found a shed in my flower garden

Hollychan May 31, 2010 09:52 PM

I know it's not one of Eddie's or Belle's that I have thrown outside. It seems to be patternless, so I'm thinking it's from a black racer, but of course when I saw it, my mind starts thinking it could be Lizzie, my long-lost lavender Cal king who got out about 2 and a half years ago. I know they lighten as they age, but do their sheds generally not show their banded pattern?

I'm going to keep a sharp eye out in the yard. I'd love to see who that shed belongs to. It was upwards of four feet, but in at least three pieces, so hard to judge exact length.

Picture of Lizzie from three years ago:

Throw the shed in some water and the pattern will appear.

That's the pretiest Cal King I've seen in a long time. I could own a pair like that! Was she as purple as this picture seems to show her?

Are the scales keeled?

We're about to get rain, so I may not even have to dunk the shed, I'll just check it tomorrow.

Yes, she was VERY purple and then lavender during a shed.

When I go check the shed tomorrow morning, I'll see if the scales are keeled or not.

Thanks guys.

Keeled scales would indicate black rat snake as racers have smooth scales

Have you placed the shed in wtaer yet and let it soak?

You will see a pattern. The dark areas will be the chocolate bands and the light areas with be the cream banding.

I found shed in the wild and discovered this trick while dumping a shed in a toilet after coming back from a trip in the Iddywild area in calif. Turned it it was a Mtn king shed as the tricolor bands could be cleary seen.
