If you little guy is about to shed it may be the reason for a faint whistling sound...

If the noise isn't a hiss it could be RI... does he have excess mucus/saliva in his mouth? When he flicks his tongue, it is forked? or are the forks stuck together? Do you hear popping sounds when he breathes? Do you see any bubbles coming out of his mouth?

I havent notices any signs...when he flicks his tounge out its forked...looks normal,no excess saliva or anything. should i mist him more? the humidity is down to 60%....and its not a hiss, ive been hissed at more times than you can count. I thought it just may have been "one of those things" like when we breath somtimes its a faint whistle sound. I can only hear it when my ear is right up against (or about 1/2 inch) my ear.

If you aren't seeing anything wrong I wouldn't worry much... just keep him warm and keep a good eye on him. If you notice any symptoms of RI act fast, RI is 10000x easier to get rid of when caught early... Snakes with advanced RI can take a long time to recover.

I wouldn't overdue it with the misting unless he is in a shed cycle, which like I said can cause some "sounds" all on it's own. From the way you describe him I wouldn't be surprized if he is about to shed in the near future...

Of the snakes I have treated for RI none of them really made any whistling sounds...

Keep us posted.

in my opinion it just sounds like it is like a dry nostril. like when people breath in their nose sometimes it will make an awkward sound. He just started up again afer 30 mins of handeling. should i take him to a vet just incase?

LeeFobes Sep 23, 2003 07:46 PM

when he sleeps his head is resting on his body looking towards the opening of the hide. normal?

LeosAnonymous Sep 23, 2003 08:02 PM

I wouldn't be running to the vet yet... I would almost be willing to bet he is going into a shed cycle.

Just keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't show any symptoms of RI.

And when I say "head elevated" I mean he sleep with his head up on this water bowl, or sleeps with his head all the way up the side of the tank (body will look L shaped).

Another thing I noticed about the snakes I have treated with RI is that some will lose body/muscle tone, they get all "loose".

Try not to get overly stressed, I'm not trying to freak you out, just giving you some things to watch for.

Hopefully he will go into a shed soon and when he finishes there will be no more whistling.

hmmmm....it does seem a little flimsy when i first get it out the tank after its been on the heat mat...but then it tightens up and squeezes my hand pretty hard while moving about...seem normal to you? i think the heat is relaxing the muscles like it does to ours.

LeosAnonymous Sep 23, 2003 09:17 PM

I don't really think you have anything to worry about yet... just relax and keep an eye on him. If you see any other RI symptoms start to show get him to a vet.

But for now try to relax, I really didn't mean to freak you out with all this... I'm just telling you what I have seen dealing with RI so you know some common symptoms to watch for.
