New to RES's...a few questions!

divinitry Sep 22, 2003 09:26 PM

Hello, I am a gecko breeder and this week I will be recieving my first two RES's ever, and I am VERY excited...I've already set up an enclosure with proper filtration, basking area, etc. and after reading several conflicting care sheets I'm wondering about the diet of RES's. What do you feed them and how often do you feed them? Also how do you make sure they get enough calcium? Thank you for answering my newbie questions BTW the two that I'm getting are hatchlings...thanks!

Reptomin food sticks are agreed upon by most turtle lovers, and if you're looking for calcium, cuttle bone (for birds) is great! just break off small chunks and see if they'll eat it, some won't but when they do, it's really good. RES's also LOVE earthworms.

I feed my baby RES Reptomin turtle food (3-4 sticks a day), Reptomin shrimp treat (Gammarus), a bit of hamburger meat occasionally, and I also drop some oyster calcium (I break these vitamins in half because they're really big) and vitamin D's in the tank. So far, he seems to be flourishing. I got him three weeks ago and he's still only about 2-3 inches long, so I think he's still a pretty young baby. He seems to like this routine though, but the more I read in this forum the more it seems that turtles, like any animals, have their own personal quirks, and if I were you I'd start with the Reptomin and then add some treats and see if he likes them. Best of luck with your baby!
