Need Help to ID this Lizard

granddl Jun 01, 2010 11:28 AM

My son and I were out doing some herping here in Ventura, CA and we came across this interesting lizard. Looks like a relative of the collared lizard...non keeled/spiny scales and the body structure, but brown patternless dorsal. However, this is not in collared lizard range either. I tried to grab it for closer inspection and pics, but no luck.

We also came across this unusually tame Western Fence Lizard.

Finally, we located this ground squirrel burrow where young were popping out and allowed us to get close enough for some pics.

I was thinking chuck too, but I am quite a ways west of their range according to http://www.californiaherps.com/lizards/maps/satermap.jpg
I am just off the coast between Malibu and Santa Barbara.

I think it's a leopard lizard (Gambelia wislizenii), just has a weak/missing pattern.
