anyone know about Ford's Rainbow Boas?

dravenxavier Sep 22, 2003 09:28 PM

I have the chance to get a few of them, but I've never heard anything about them except that they are rare. I doubt I'll get them, but now that I'm wondering what they are, I won't stop wondering until I find out. Any info (pics, care, size, rarity, etc) would be GREATLY appreciated!

They are from Haiti. They used to be commonly availble and very inexpensive (like a lot of things).
The adults can be persuaded to eat mice but I believe the young are anole feeders.
To me they resemble Emory's rat snakes in pattern and size.

I'm going to assume so. All the list said was "Fords Rainbow Boa. Rare!" My friend then called and asked about it, and they said they were the only ones in the US selling them. We can get a pair for $150-$180. Good price, or not? Their feeding habits don't matter too much. My friend and I work at a pet shop and the boas were on one of the wholesaler's list along with some other high end exotics...but we can (obviously) get anoles very cheap. But any info on Epicrates fordi will do well. I did find pics of E. fordi last night, but no information. Very beautiful snake. Kind of reminded me of my mex-mex.

Can't comment on the price as I have no idea what they would sell for now. They used to be $20.00 when I was in high school!
In view of the fact that they are hardly available anymore I would guess that the price isn't bad.
Tolson and Henderson's book (mentioned below) has some info on them and more importantly, a good bibliography. That might be a good book to look at--although it is a WILDLY OVERPRICED book.

They are actually from the entire island of Hispaniola (Haiti and Dom. Rep.) and have been collected from some of the small offshore islands. Whilst working in the DR I had the opportunity to keep several of these small boas. All fed on Anolis only but then I never tried to switch them to pink mice.
They were very easy to keep and a very nice natured little animal.

are not rare. They are quite common in their native Hispaniola. Unfortunately, there isn't much demand for them. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are closed, as far as exporting wildlife. My colony (3.1) all slam f/t mice. The juvie's are small, but can be enticed to taking scented pinks. Crutchfield used to sell CB babies for $125.00. The price you saw isn't bad considering there is no current "market" price. The only relation to rainbow boas is the shared genus-Epicrates. Good luck!

Later,
Jay
