Eggs never fattened but...

blazeyoungblood Sep 22, 2003 09:33 PM

I can see the little embryo developing in there. I am checking every three days and it keeps getting larger and larger. The shell itself is still dented in a fair amount, this has been an ongoing problem for me, but if it is still developing and I can't get the egg to firm up, then could it still turn out okay? For those that haven't been following my posts, this is my first pair of fertile eggs that I am attempting to incubate. Any advise would be great, I tried a damp paper towel on the eggs for a few days with no result. Can eggs dent from overhydration? It is very very humid in the incubator. Thanks!

if the damp paper towel did not work then I don't know what to tell you ??? Could it be that they are infertile and you don't know what you are seeing, don't mean to come off sounding like a smaty butt or nothing it is just I have never seen eggs that were fertile that did not plump up. I would think that if they don't plump up they won't have the required moisture to complete the hatch but who knows stranger things have happened. Do you incubate in delis with the lid on? If so is there moisture condensed on the lid or sides of the container at all times? Go to WWW. albeysreptiles.com he has the best incubation process I have ever used. Wish you luck it is a heartbreaking thing to loose your first eggs, I have been there.

I do keep it closed, and there is always condensation on the lid and walls when I check on the eggs. The vermiculite is always moist as well, so I don't think it is a question of authority. I haven't really seen too many photos online or in books that will really give me the good impression of what I am looking at. As I see it, they both glow redish pink, and they both have a redish formation on the inside top of the egg that is gradually getting larger, and some red veins are visible. Is the redish blob on the top the embryo? This has been my assumpting, but I am not completely sure. If anyone can provide some pictures for me of what exactly a fertile egg looks like when candled, That would be awesome. Most pictures I have seen just have an egg glowing pinkish red with a few veins. I've heard nothing about the redish formation on the top. Thanks!

sounds like a embryo to me. Usually a pink glow is enouph to claim fertile for the first time. Veins and a embryotic area are a good sighn. Hope all turns out they may be ok. Yea, the spot you see will most generally always remain toward the top where an air bubble is that is why you should never turn the eggs from the original position.
