Way OT, my new toy......

rainbowsrus Jun 03, 2010 01:55 PM

Just picked up this beauty yesterday.

2001 BMW M Roadster, totally stock original, 90,000 miles and still looks brand new!! A little research and this is car number 16 of the series. Was an early production unit that was sent around to the dealerships to show off the new series. 3.2 liter with 315 HP in line six, 5 speed manual gearbox. WOW, talk about pinning you to your seat.

Acquired these pics from the ad before it was taken down...

So, let's see your toys!!!!

Yeah, I'm on cloud 9. I had (still have) a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, 1999 and had so much fun just driving it around, typical little glued to the road smaller sportcar. But it was IMO underpowered with a little 4 cyl. I knew I liked the whole convertible sportcar thing but wanted more on the go end, got it and in a gorgeous package.

Nice, my little toy is an 03 Monte Carlo SS with K&N cold air intake and dual flowmaster 40's but I'm sure it's no where near as fun as that little one.

Nice pick up! i have always wanted the Z3 M coupe, im a sucker for hatch backs sometimes. Although snakes may not be my best subject cars on the other hand pretty much are lol. I have had my share of "get up and go" toys like this. I never knew these were number from the factory. A friend of mine had a Z3 4cyl with an eaton blower on it a few years back, and let me tell you that was a blast through the back roads of eastern Pennsylvania and just over the bridge in jersey. Best of luck with it, and most of all be safe! i know how tempting getting wheels into the next gear can be, but its never worth what it could be.

Yeah it's a lot of fun. And yeah, the top end is not something to be toyed with or even achieved often.

All cars have a sequence number, is part of the VIN. I just googled BMV vin decoders and found out the 2001 M (US LH drive 3.2 liter 315 HP) Roadster sequence numbers (last 6 digits of VIN) range from LJ80000 - LJ80921 with 922 total production. I guess I technically have the 17th one built as they count 80000 as the first one.

Dunno, maybe it's just dumb but I think it's pretty cool to know it's such an early production number. And that it was specifically built as a showroom model. I'd bet they paid a lot of attention to detail during assembly. Maybe even hand built.

Thats pretty cool. Glad your responsible with it. I dunno about hand built though, thats a rarity to be achieved by a car manufacturer lately. I know Lambo's are, some porsches, parts of the new Nissan GT-R, and the drive train of any of the Honda/Acura Type-R line is assembled by hand though. If i come across anything along the lines of that i'll let you know though.

Yeah, wasn't thinking really "hand built", just that it was likely built with intention of sending around as a showroom car so may have received extra attention to detail.

Any way you slice it the car is gorgeous. Very much does NOT look like a used car.

Dave,
...Way to go. M Power in the Z3 body (which IMO is much prettier than the Z4) is a great combination. We are gonna have to meet somewhere in the middle of the country for a shootout.
Jeff

rainbowsrus Jun 04, 2010 12:18 AM

Thanks Jeff, I have to agree on the Z3 being much nicer than the Z4. I went to a dealer that had a 2007 Montego blue Z4 3.0i and was very unimpressed with it. ok power, very nice handling, interior looked like cheap plastic. They also had a 2001 M in black and test drove that as well and was instantly hooked. Awesome power, top notch leather interior, not cheap looking at all. Outside styling is much more sporty. Did have to give up some bells and whistles like auto memory seat positioning and remote controlled top. Didn't really like the black Z3 though as it had $6k rims, Italian and no longer in production and also was "improved" all over with white light corners and Dinan engine mods. (and a price tag to reflect all the extra spent on the car) I wanted one that was stock.

in my research I found out the 2001/2002 M roadsters were the ones to get and actually fairly rare, less then 1600 in North America and less than 2000 total on the planet. IMO adds a coolness factor to the car. And I'd guess at least a few have been wrecked or modified into full on race car.

Jeff Clark Jun 04, 2010 08:30 AM

Dave,
...Your experience sounds like my Corvette hunt. I looked at newer ones including brand new C6 ZO6s. They were nice. I then found my very low mileage 2002 C5 ZO6. It seems more gutsy though it is not as fast as a new ZO6. It is IMO also prettier though less modern euro-exotic looking. It was around one third the price of a new ZO6 so I went for it. It has been very dependable and is great fun to take around corners at insane speeds. I went to the track and watched an excellent driver in a near stock C5 ZO6 whip up on all the Porsches and C6 ZO6s that were there. I just got back from a Florida fishing trip and got 26 MPG on the highway.
...We caught Red Snapper and Amberjack until our arms hurt.
We were 17 miles S-SW of Pensacaola which was several miles beyond where the news people say there was oil on the surface wednesday but we did not see any of it. I hate reporters almost as much as I hate politicians. I do love refusing their requests for interviews. They always seem like they are amazed that someone would not want to get their name in the papers or ugly face on TV. In my experience they ALWAYS get the story wrong so I just refuse to play along in their silly game.
Life is good,
Jeff

Hey Dave, looks like years of cleaning up snake poop finally paid off. That's a really hot car. I'm just glad I could do my little part in helping you pay for it. And all this time I thought my money was going to help your daughter get her car :P

Paul D

rainbowsrus Jun 04, 2010 11:43 AM

Thanks Paul, appreciate your help in my quest!

As for my daughters, my wife and I both agree they NEED to buy their own cars. We both knew kids in high school that were given cars and too many of those kids did not seem to get the value of having a car and quite often were wrecked fairly quickly. (in at least a few cases, replaced and wrecked again)

Of course we have and will help them. And of course daddy's car repair shop is the cheapest in town - only need to purchase the necessary parts and supplies.

Cool idea for a car but this baby is staying factory original.

Besides, if I painted it in a BRB color scheme I'd have to re-upholster it in genuine BRB snakeskin. And we ALL know that aint gonna happen!!!!

That looks like a fun car to drive. I'm thinking a nice cruise along Hwy 1 to break it in. Summer is definitely here!

Here's mine. A '69 Camaro. She's a true SS/RS 350 4-speed with matching numbers engine and drive train. Most of the sheet metal is original with very little rust. The fenders have been replaced but are GM. You can't see it in this picture but one of the things I like most about the car are the original SS wheels.

My plan is to have her restored in time to drive right through my midlife crisis. I'm thinking a Brazilian theme will work nicely for the paint. Garnet red body with a black hockey stripe and a new black vinyl top.

Nice Camaro. I had two first generation Camaros. A 68 RS327 and a 69 SS396. I got both of them when they were just a couple years old.

Thanks Mike, the only timeI drove it so far with the top up was with my wife (hair).

Looks like you have a lot of potential in your 69 Camaro, will also be a very sweet ride when restored.

Great Car!

The 3 is a much better car than the 4 - at least in looks. I drove a rental one in Germany and the only disappointment was I could not figure out how to turn the traction control off - so no good burnouts. It was a rental so I did not care about the cost of the tires, but it was an awesome car.

I have a few toys but so not have pics handy.

Thanks Mike, yeah I like the looks of the Z3 better myself and have driven a 2007 Z4 3.0i and two 2001 M's, one stock (mine, 315HP) and one with Dinan stage three mods (350HP) and no comparison between the 3.0 and the M's. Even though I'm sure the Dinan has more power, IMO a waste unless you're really into racing it. I plan on keeping mine 100% stock.

LOL, I'll see your Dodge Challenger with 2 more cylinders, 2.5 more Liters displacement (damn near enough for another whole engine) and 61 more HP and raise you a matched set of Edmunds track results. Hope you like looking at the backside of my M-Roadster.

The stock R/T doesn't have the Super Track Pack my car has with 3.92 rear end, Goodyear F1 tires, full ESP off, upgraded suspension (better brakes and larger sway bars, etc.). As far as power goes, I'll be adding forced induction down the road so I expect to easily run twelve second quarters no problem.
Before I can do that though, I'm thinking of trading in my other toy pictured here (heavily modded '06 GT) towards a new 5.0 Mustang. I love the GT as my beater and daily driver but the mileage is getting up there at 87,000 so it's time to go before the resale value gets to low. So there you have my two toys.
On another note, I had an M6 blow by me in the GT several weeks ago. I was just cruising along with the top down and he nailed it to show me what he had. Now there's a sleaper with some serious HP and performance but it doesn't cheap that's for sure.
