***HELP****BP Not Eating!

alcade08 Jun 04, 2010 08:26 PM

4' 3 yr old BP refuse food! I have had him for about 8 mo.s now and I converted him to F/T and he ate with no problem. He eats a small rat once a week. If they are to small he eats 2 of them. He has never not wanted to eat. The other day he shed (one piece) and so I tried to feed him. He was ready to eat when the phone rang and I looked away for a second and....well he went for it but got my finger insted. It was my falt I looked away! He let go imediatly but did draw blood. He pulled back and would not take the rat. I cleaned my hands and defrosted a new rat but he was still not interested. I waited a couple of days and got a live one and well he is still not interested........I live in Las Vegas and it is getting over 100 deg. The house get to 78 when we are gone and 75 while at home. Could it be the temp? Any advise will help....Thanks!

Maybe you spoiled him and all he wants is fingers now...lol. I live in AZ and of course we have about the same temps here that you do. It could be one of 3 things all retty simple. Hes just not hungry right now, the temps maybe a little to low for him or who knows, maybe he is thinking he should be breeding so he stops eating for a few weeks or even months. I would try to increase the temps first. Maybe a heating pad under the tank or something. I have my snakes in a room that is pretty tepm controlled by using an oil radiator type of heater so they sta about 83 to just about 90 this time of the year. Several of my males are eating spuratically right now because I have been breeding them to my females for the last several months. I am sure he will get hungry and eat soon but I would try bringing up the temps a little bit first. Jay

sounds to me like you own a ball python! i wouldent worry about it he will eat when he wants to.. ball pythons are just funny feeders sometimes they eat like there starved to death & other times they just stop for no reason at all. i learned a long time ago just ignore it and try every week until he resumes feeding. people with large collections of ball pythons call fasting periods like this a well deserved break! so just give him some time he will come around.

Welcome to owning a ball python.
