Anyone have an albino tegu?

shortydsm Sep 22, 2003 10:44 PM

Since I am 90% sure I will be getting a tegu soon, I was thinking I might invest $650 in getting an albino from the St. Pierres. I was wondering if any of you actually had one & if so, could you post pics and/or share any stories?
Thanks.

My daughter purchased an albino Tegu last year in Daytona Beach. It's a wonderful animal and beautiful but I'm afraid it's afflicted with a problem not too uncommon in albino animals. It has vision problems to the point where hunting insects is almost impossible. We hand feed him insects and mix them with ground meat but I think the lack of more insects in his diet has slowed his growth rate quite a bit. He's healthy, just growing very slowly.
I'm sure Phil will probably answer this post with photos of his albino also. Ours looks quite different than Phils as it has no orange on it at all.
I wouldn't discourage you from purchasing an albino. We've really enjoyed ours.

Jane is right, mine seems to have problems with sight also, but she is a great, and hardy animal, I would recommend them, here is a pic of a female from the St. Pierre's...

I would agree as well.......I have only had my albino male and female blues for a couple weeks now but I can notice an obvious difference in the eye sight of the albino blue compared to the normal blues. It seems as though he has to get close to his prey in order to see it, but he is a superb eater and is great. I purchased them from the St. Pierres. Chris Allen
