Strange Toffeebelly eggs

jnemani Jun 05, 2010 01:53 PM

Both my first and second clutch from the Toffee line had the eggs go completely transparent a few days before they popped their heads out. I've never had this happen, anyone else?

I have tricolor eggs that are completely transparent hatching right now, pretty cool looking!

Maybe hognose snakes are the missing link between oviparous and ovoviviparous colubrids... LOL

Actually I always wondered if that is the result of under-calcification or lack of calcium intake by a gravid female, or if it is just what hognose eggs do... Personal, I give the rodents a dip in calcium powder every two feedings for my gravid female and once a month for everyone else... Awesome photo by the way...

Hey Gregg, I enjoy reading about the care you give to your hoggies. I too dip the mice in calcium for the females. Once a month I dip the rear end of the mice for all the hoggies in a mixture of probiotics and reptile vitamins. I actually like it when the eggs go transparent, as I can tell in advance whether I should become excited or not. LOL.

Hey, Thanks Wendell... I apperciate your comment and your post...

I am new to hognose care and breeding but not new to snakes... I pretty much take what I know from working with other species of snake and add all the great info from you seasoned hognose keepers and breeders and mix it all up... LOL... Seems to be working well so far...

That is so cool! I've never seen eggs like that! Jeff

That's really neat! I haven't seen eggs completely clear like that before, but I have had eggs with areas similar to that.
