Feeding question ...

allegro7 Jun 06, 2010 11:11 AM

Hi .. I'm new here but have been viewing the site for sometime for useful info, so thanks for all that in the past.

I've got a 4 y/o corn that's usually a good feeder; one or two adult mice every 7-10 days. This spring his interest in finding a mate has taken over his appetite more than in past years; I know this is normal so I'm not concerned. He's drinking water and looks very healthy. He hasn't eaten in 6 or 7 weeks; he has also shed twice in this period. He normally takes frozen feeders; his cage temps seem good; warm spot in the 80's, cooler in mid 70's, so nothing in his environment has changed.

My question is, how long should I go before trying some other methods (frozen mice from another supplier, fresh-killed, live mice, rat pups, etc.). What might be some signs to look for that would suggest I start trying other approaches.

Thanks!

Hi.

Sounds like my male ghost corn. He went few weeks without eating this past spring. He finally ate for me couple weeks ago. I just kept trying to feed him every week an eventually he ate. He prefers fresh killed rat crawlers so if you haven't tried one of them might try that. (If he doesnt' eat the f/k you can put it in the freezer for another time.)

dont worry about it - they can go for periods of many months without eating - likely the temp and light changes triggered his breeding response - they only want to wander around and breed - just offer food periodically - he will eat when he is good and hungry

... thanks for the reply; glad to know that a month or two is no big deal. Like I said, he's drinking and looks very healthy. I'll just keep trying one week at at time.
