what a weekend!

varanid Jun 06, 2010 10:43 PM

yesterday and today were hot. Yesterday hit over 100 (and for some reason I thought I'd field herp in that heat--What was I thinking??).
I went out Saturday morning and then again in the afternoon, and this evening.
Total animals: lots of cnemmies, a couple of horned lizards, a box turtle and a good sized diamondback eating something. And leopard frogs :D I love finding amphibians. Also saw cool inverts. No black widows this time (thank god) but beetles, tarantulas, butterflies and the like.

I've seen more of these so far this season than in the last 2 years put together. Maybe 5-6 so far, all in the last 2 weeks. Texas horned lizard

Ditto. Ornate box turtle. I think my total so far this season is 7 or 8?? I saw 1 last year, 2-3 the year before. It's astonishing, and I'm stoked. The crowning was a juvy I found probably 3" or so across? I love finding sub-adult animals. Means things are breeding and babies are surviving.

I actually got a picture of one of these buggers!! Don't know the exact species (we've got several Cnemidophorus species)

dead cnemmie being eaten by ants

assasins bug. Flew at my face after this picture and I screamed

Neat beetle

Pretty!

First herp:

2nd herp, about 15' away. She was near a bench I'd planned to sit on to watch the frogs...I changed my plans pretty quickly! She was finishing up a large meal. I couldn't get any great shots--she buzzed if I got nearer than like 8-10' and I didn't want to disturb dinner. About 4-4.5' in length. Look at that bulge...I watched her work it back maybe 10-15 minutes. Real pretty snake, but highly irritable. Most atrox I find aren't actually *that* cranky but she sure was.

This guy was right off a harvester ant trail but he wasn't still eating when I came along. Neat as always

First tarantula of my year about the size of a half dollar.

after a slow start it's been a good season. Snake wise it's pretty light, but an amazing number of anurans and chelonians, and lots of horned lizards. and what snakes I've found have been favorites of mine even if they are common ones

Congrats! I went out in this heat & saw one DOR ground Skink. Depressing. Even my favorite turtle basking spot had 2 sliders.
Plus, I didn't realize I was ill, so I worked into a nice case of Sinus infection trying to turn into Bronchitis. as Usual. late in the year, but apparently all over town. Guess I'm not missing much. Soon as the mercury hits 100% here, every herp vanishes.

I envy you the Horned Lizards BTW.
& That is a Prarie Racerunner ( don't have the guide handy for the correct binomial!).

I think I have seen more this week than in the last 2 years put together--this is true of both horned lizards an box turtles. We had an incredibly wet winter and spring which I guess has something to do with it--lots of food for them at least. I've also seen subadults and juvies which is nice...always good to find young 'uns!

Yeah, same here. But the sudden heatwave sent everything to ground. Oh well, supposed to rain buckets tomorrow, so maybe there will be much more to see..

Nice finds. Cool WDB, and I always love to see the TX "horny toads."
