Caught this guy last night.

a153fish Jun 08, 2010 07:16 AM

I've been seeing so many Corns and rat snakes lately because of the rain we've been getting. Here is one of the ones I was able to catch before the traffic did. He is about 4 feet and surprisingly tame! I may just keep him, he's got some nice dark stripes which I don't see too often round these parts.

This is one I caught last year it's smaller but you see the lines aren't as defined. I let a lot of them go on their way last year but this one has a unique head color. It looks almost green in the sun light. Unfortunately both of these are males. I do have a young female I hatched out a couple years ago and she gave me some eggs this year with this green headed male. I just realized I don't have any pics of the female? I'll have to remedy that.

That is an outrageous find. I'm so envious of you guys that live near snakes. The only thing I ever found was a garter snake. No colubrids up north where I live.

a153fish Jun 08, 2010 04:55 PM

Where do live Canada? I've seen guys post some very cool finds all the way thru Colorado and even New Jersey, and New York. Chances are you probably take those Garters for granted. I lived in Louisiana as a kid and speckled kings were pretty common. Now that I lived away from them for so long I really miss them.

I live in NYC, so I'm kind of limited as to what I find. Even a garter snake is very, very rare find. Good luck whatever you do with that beauty.

Nice find. Makes me wanna move down south.

KevinM Jun 08, 2010 02:32 PM

Donv, southern herpers want to move out west, eastern herpers want to move down south, western herpers want to move out east LOL!! We all seem to get tired of the variety of "backyard" snakes we find in the areas we live in LOL!!

This is true Kev! I've just recently rekindled a love for the Yellow rat snakes. I have kinda always thought of them as junk snakes but I am really finding myself wanting to work with a few strains. What better opportunity then to work with some cool snakes that I can find locally?

Me to! I've come close a few times to getting into yellows "junk" ratsnakes. Reality is nice ones are pretty impressive large snakes.

KevinM Jun 08, 2010 09:34 PM

Well, I currently have a yearling texas rat and two broadbanded watersnakes I captured road cruising the past couple of weeks. Definitely considered "junk snakes" around here. However, like Jorge and the yellow rats, I thought these snakes were just very cool looking. Its been YEARS since I actually kept a water snake, or a texas rat. I would LOVE to get some nice black rats!!!

a153fish Jun 09, 2010 07:15 AM

Yeah Kev I think many people overlook some very cool snakes just because they are common where they live. I am guilty too. Oh and a pair of nice Black rats would be cool. I have a friend that has family in North Carolina and he used to catch lots of them there. I may have to give him a call, lol.

The PA black rats, at least the ones I've seen around here, are real nice. They get jet black and big. If I get any this summer I'm thinking of keeping them.

I am too.
I have a coal black 6 1/2' male I've been wanting to get a mate for. We had them in our area when I was a kid (way, way back)but were driven out.
Alot of habitat has been restored since then and the woods behind my home is overrun with deer mice and a multitude of frog species that could support a population of them. My male is from a gene pool close by and I'd like to find a female that is too in the interest of keeping a repopulation as proper as I can. No luck as yet with an adult. All I've found are young that are a long ways off from breeding.
Not being a canable and with a primarily rodent/bird diet they wouldn't threaten the coastal plains milk population we have either so I really want to give it a go.
Hey sooner or later an adult female will turn uo right?
Mike.

True, its always greener on the other side of the pasture, but I'm in central Pa. Some nice black rats can be found, but you just don't get the variety you see down south. I'm hoping to head somewhat south this summer, maybe NC, and do some herping.

That looks line a breeder to me!!Definitely a keeper!

OOOps! I meant to say "like a breeder!"

Yeah and I would really like to get a pair of really yellow ones like the ones Sunshine Serpents sells from Palm Beach county. I wish I had the time to go hunting in that part of the woods, lol.
