Omaha- snake "attack"

Bolitochrome Jun 09, 2010 06:53 PM

Man Attacked by Snake in Critical Condition

Joy of joys.

If you drape something around your neck and it holds you back, does it really count as an "attack"?

Once again, an irresponsible keeper doing stupid "show-off" things. But to the press...of course, it is the snake who
"attacked" the man. Sensationalism via the press to the general public.

If you have ever kept these magnificent creatures, you know what it is all about. The public will never know. This is so sad.

jlsreptiles2011 Jun 09, 2010 09:00 PM

Are you freakin' kidding me? An attack is like a dog mauling, bear attack, an alligator biting your arm off or a chimp making you a unique and biting your face off. Not an attack: A 6 foot snake treating your neck like a big tree limb and trying to keep from falling and you freaking out because you think it's try to kill you. Snakes only kill stuff that they can eat or maybe make a mistake because the jack hole had the smell of what the snake thought was dinner. Even at that remote possibility the snake would have bitten him and kept ahold of him while it was choking him out. Freakin' idiots. More bad publicity.

A 6 foot snake? Really?
The dude must have the smallest chicken neck ever...

I wonder what the friend was doing? I would think he would maybe pull the snake off? I can't even imagine how a 6 foot snake (assuming a burm or a boa) could possibly kill someone?

Gotta be something like this. Maybe the guy read about the little girl being killed by her parents in Orlando and then blaming it on the family pet?

Yea and they didn't mention he has no Arms, Ive never heard of such a Thing in my whole life. And of corse its a Boa, they always do that. If its a Boa the Call it a Python. Then to top it off they bring in Kids to say it was just around thier necks. But yep another owner of a Snake that shouldn't have one. He needs smack in the head.

Here's the article. This isn't good. Now the snake is 9 feet long. Still no comment on what species it is.

Tragedy for the guy and his family but it's almost like natural selection. Do some research on accidental deaths in the US per year and see that 'Sh!t Happens'. This should have no effect on our hobby at all and any governor, senator, other political figures, or animal rights group that play off this are nothing more than scumbags that are trying to personally benefit from someones untimely death.

See who the real bad guys are who want to gain something from this...

Yeah, but those "scumbags" have a lot more power than the herp community. Everglades...child killed in Florida and now this?
It doesn't take much to stir up the public when most of the public is afraid of snakes to begin with.

Paul Hollander Jun 10, 2010 09:27 AM

Right on, Matt!

Rule #1 in handling fairly large snakes: Never, ever let it wrap all the way around your neck.

Rule #2 in handling fairly large snakes: Have a friend who knows what to do on hand to help in case of trouble.

These are decades old.

Bolitochrome Jun 10, 2010 10:20 AM

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I abhor that they would harm the snake out of ignorance...but I would think cutting it would have been pretty effective at removing it. One thing they also do not mention in the article is whether the snake was just squeezing to keep from falling or if it struck and constricted. Two very different things, IMO. The way the snake holds and the difficulty of removing it are very different. I guess it wouldn't matter to the media though.

Should we call him a "runner up"?

Maybe it wasn't his thing though, and he will take the gold next time around when he is cleaning his gun,or texting while driving,or simply falls off a balcony because he was sitting on the rail while opening his 9th beer.

Seriously though, anyone that really knows how to care for any snake knows that they are easily unwrapped if you just start at the tail...,and i also agree that the animal was probably just scared of falling.

Here in Quebec province, it's been all over the news recently.

A 21 days old baby got killed by a Husky. It's all over the news.

On the radio, they asked if the Huskies were a dangerous race.

But no one ever spoke of banning dogs because of that.
It's more the irresponsible parents (and grandparent in that case) that should be banned.

jlsreptiles2011 Jun 11, 2010 07:22 AM

Just as I said. There way more dog attacks that kill or seriously injure people than there are people seriously injured or killed by big snakes. It's just the idiots that drink their case of beer and decide that feeding their collection of big burmese and retics would be an awesome idea like that guy in California back in the mid 90's or the f**ktard that decided that not having a secure top on his tank for that albino burmese would be a smart idea and it tried making a snack out of the baby. Definitely if you are not smart enough to do research or atleast ask simple questions about the snake you are buying then you don't need to own a snake at all. I bet the last thing the guy said was, “Hey y`all watch this” or “Hey y'all check this sh*t out. Ain't it cool?” Like the one guy said, “Survival of the fitest”. Not only in physical ability, but also in mental.
