Breeding Age Question

lizardking18 Sep 23, 2003 02:10 AM

Hey everyone, i'm new to the boards as far as posting but i've been reading and browsing around for about a month now. This place is really cool from what i've seen and its seems like everyone is really friendly and knowledgeable about their herps. My question was what age is the norm for males and females to start breeding? Is it more based on age or size they reach before they are sexually mature? Any info would be appreciated. to share some background about myself i am a college junior majoring in environmental science at oklahoma state. i have a trio of leopard geckos hi yellow and jungle, and a pair of kenyans that i have bred recently. kind of an amateur but thats what i love about it.....meeting others with the same passion as myself. thanks and see you all around the boards!! -Seth

Weight is you key factor when deciding when to breed a leopard. A good rule of thumb is 45 grams at the minimum. Some males can breed earlier then that, but I wouldn’t suggest it. It is best to let the females get to 55 grams, they will be able to produce more eggs, and recover quickly. Post some pictures of your guys if you get the chance, and good luck!

I myself go by at least 40 grams weight and 10 months old for each. Now take to mind this is a bare minnimum. Better if not to breed a female till she reaches 55 or 60 grams. Egg laying is a strenuous process on them.
