grey or black, either way, is it actually a wild caught?

definitely doesn't look like any normal black rat I've ever seen

Very interesting. Is this typical for that area? Do they get darker with age?

some of the ones ive caught here were all jet black,really pretty..
I just moved here less than a year ago ,im only 30 min from N.C. This place is loaded with rat snakes ive also seen three corns hear ,they were all hit by cars though by the time i got to them...
