Baby BRB's 1st Meal Results

paublito Jun 10, 2010 01:31 PM

Feed my new litter baby BRB's last night for the 1st time and thought I'd share my results for those interested.

In an attempt to start them on F/T early, I offered F/T pinky rats 1st, and used snake hook to simulate movement when first introduced. Live fuzzy/crawler mice where offered a little over an hour later, if they did not take F/T rat pinks.*Note I had 6 F/T rat pinks and 5 Live fuzzy/crawler mice to work with.

3 of 11 ate F/T pinky rats, 1 right away and other 2 took 30-60 mins.

4 of 11 ate Live fuzzy/crawler mice. 1 right away and other 3 took 15 - 30 mins.

4 of 11 have not yet eaten, however, I ran out of Live fuzzy/crawler mice.

1 Live fuzzy/crawler mice was killed but not eaten, unfortunately I may have disturbed the process on accident.

I will try to feed the remaining un-feed babies in a day or 2, repeating the process.

I don't know the exact temperature of the pinky rats when offered, however, they probably could have been hotter, as they did seemed to cool down quickly. Next time I'll raise the temp and check with my heat gun.
thanks

The male has some connecting pattern but not as impressive as the new little guys. I may hold it back for myself.

Tried to feed the remaining 4 unfeed baby BRBs F/T pinky rats again at about 9:30 pm on Friday. This time I made sure that the rat pinks were "hot" but unfortunately not one of baby BRBs went for it, even after more than a hour. Oh well, thought I'd try anyways. Looks like I am off to get some more live fuzzy mice.

Have you tried leaving the F/T pinky rats in there overnight with them? I was having difficulty getting my litter to take a F/T off of hemostats(yes they were warm)so I just left them in the cage overnight and I had 11 of the 13 eat them overnight. My female does that, so they must be taking after mom!

I DID in fact leave 3 or 4 F/T pinky rats in overnight in hopes that the babies may eat them when they feel safe to do so. Plus, I figured that I wasn't going to try to re-use the pinkys again anyways, so it would really waste anything. None of them were eaten, however, most of the babies, shed a day or 2 after this 2nd feeding attempt, and which may or may not have been a factor.
