Zeolite Odpr Control

pyromaniac Jun 10, 2010 08:01 PM

I have a few mesh bags of Zeolite volcanic rocks in strategic places in my cabin, such as over the bull snake cage, the big Pacific gopher snake cage, and the cat box. I have always used this for the cat box, with great results, but when the weather warmed up I realized I had to deploy a couple more bags at the my big snakes' cages, even though I remove all the waste right away. The Zeolite rocks really help with the faint snakey odor of the big cages. The little snakes don't make near as much of a stink as they are so small.

Every few months I rinse the bags of rocks in clean water then air dry them in the sun for a day, and they are recharged.

Sounds very interesting. How does it compare to baking soda? Do you have a preferred source?

Thanks

I got mine at Ace Hardware some time ago. You can Google Zeolite and find all sorts of sources. What I have is little volcanic rocks in 1 pound mesh bags that I place on top of the cat box lid or on top of the snake cages. One must of course still remove the waste in a timely manner, but this Zeolite definitely puts the kibosh on that lingering odor. Because it is in the mesh bags it is not like baking soda, which in my experience does not work well anyway, and the Zeolite never comes in direct contact with the cats or snakes. Even if it did (there is a powdered form for rugs and cat litter) it is harmless as all it is is volcanic rock, no sodium or chemicals.
