savannah help

trompo0 Jun 11, 2010 08:05 PM

Hey guys. I got a savannah about a month ago from a couple that didn't want it anymore. They had told me it was a year old but its only a foot long. He was in a 40 gal tank with no substrate and very little heating. I got him home and he has eaten only four rat pups since he has been here. I've had savannahs before and they have always had a strong eating response. He doesn't, he eats once every 4 days and only a rat pup. I have offered crickets, roaches, boiled eggs, and even some dog food, but nothing. I have him in a 55gal on 6" of dirt with a humidity of 65% and basking of 115 F. I'm starting to worry he might die. Please help. Tell me what I may be doing wrong. THANK YOU.

Try raising the basking site up a little towards the light so that the surface temp will go up to 120 to 130. I would also try to cut up the food and just feed him smaller meals. Hopefully you can get him to eat more often that way. Hopefully in time it'll start to turn around. If you have a mesh lid, I'd try to cover it up as much as posssible.

if the basking spot is only 115f, then there's a good chance the ambient temp is wrong, coolest areas should be about 75/80f upto about 85/90f hot side along with a humidity of at least 60%.

basking spots 120/130f as previously mentioned, cold cages & high humidity can be big trouble for your monitor, low basking spots can cause a load of problems with digesting food & there's other problems that go along with this.

there's plenty of info in this care sheet>
