Suri growth question...

BrandonSander Jun 11, 2010 09:24 PM

Most of the snakes I have are pythons and the few boas I have are strictly kept as "pets" so I'm in no hurry to see them reach breeding size. However, I am curious about my Suri and how big he "should" be at this point.

I've had him for over a year and when I purchased him I believe he was about 6-8 months old. So, for simplicity's sake, let's just say he is about two years old. He has never refused a meal. I don't power feed any of my animals and he gets out on a fairly regular basis for some climbing exercise. (I have a "jungle gym" I constructed out of variously sized dowels that he seems to enjoy climbing on.) He is by no means over-weight and has a fairly muscular physique.

For all intents and purposes he "appears" healthy, but I'm wondering if he is "on track" as far as being the proper size. I haven't weighed him recently, but I'm wondering what a rough average length and weight would be for a two year old male Suriname B.c.c.

Thanks ahead of time for any replies you guys (and gals) can give me!

I'm still not sure if it's weird that my best friend is a two year old boa named Ronin. He's quiet, non-judgemental and listens... what more could you want?

As long as he is eating regulary and has good muscle tone, I would not be concerned. Each snake is an individual and different strains may grow larger or stay smaller than average. I see far too many obese boas in captivity.

I have always been told, and in personal experience, that the BCC true redtails grow at a slower rate even though they are the largest of boas. BCI display more rapid growth while some pythons display explosive growth directly related to their metabolisims. The BCC have slow metabolisms and are best raised slow-especially Surinames. They seem to do best with smaller food items when young. Enjoy your snakes. Bill

It really depends on the snake and its genetics... I have a bcc that is 2 years old and just over 4 feet.. and her brother is only 2.5 feet... fed the same kept the same....
