one aggressive wild beardie...

robbeardies Jun 12, 2010 02:51 PM

I just got this 6 month old male, yellow citrus X het for hypo about a month ago and had him housed by himself and now forced to put him with a cagemate(s) two adult females to free up room for my hatchlings. Well this male is so aggressive even with mates and he is just not claming down. So skittish and fiesty, won't hold still going after both females with his mouth open. Is this normal?

It can be. I never recommend m/f pairs except in very rare circumstances. I've tried many m/f pairs over time and I have only one that has worked out. So I have 16 males that live alone and one that lives with his lifetime mate. Keep in mind he has always lived with her since they were babies, that makes a big difference.

A 6 month old male dragon can easily become aggressive, for many reasons, when suddenly put in with two females. He is most likely entering puberty, as males can start around 6 months easily enough. Thus, chasing after the females he is most likely trying to mate with them, or at least dominate them. Also, if he is a large size for his age, or the females especially small, claiming his 'territory' could also explain his aggression.

If he starts injuring the females or doesn't eat, I suggest you put him back in his own cage. Better to find space for hatchlings without kicking him out of his home elsewhere. The stress of being moved isn't likely doing him any good either.
