An Off Topic...Other Reptile Interests

Jlassiter Jun 13, 2010 08:50 PM

I have been working with Kingsnakes and other Colubrids for years and just now began working with other reptiles.....

I just wanted to ask what everyone else is working with other than Kingsnakes......or Colubrids for that matter......

I think this thread would be cool to see what other reptiles us Kingsnake breeders are working with......

Here's what I have ventured into recently.....

And....I am thinking of getting some more tortoises.....I really like all the Star Torts (Indian, Sri Lankan, Burmese and Radiated)......

I dont work with either.

Actually I have been expanding my collection of Ctenosaura and Cyclura recently. With the new arrivals, they havent settled in enough to really photograph, but I will promise to share pics here in this thread when I get shots.

That's something you don't see every day.

I worked with various subs of Blue tongues for many years and took a break from Snakes.

Very cool John.

Hi John,

Nice Abronia! I had a beautiful pair about ten years ago and sold them... I regretted it almost immediately and still do to this day. If you have babies some day, please consider me.

In addition to easterns, I have been breeding and refining jungle carpet pythons for about 18 years. Recently, I jumped into the Morelia field a bit more heavily and picked up a pair of boeleni and a pair of diamond pythons. My boeleni are about 4 yrs old, they breed and my girl produces huge follicles (she has since she was 18 months) but hasn't ovulated. My diamonds are only yearlings, but they are awesome. Oh, I was also swept up in the pet rock hobby (ball pythons) heavily and am just now beginning to regain my sanity. I like some of the more obvious morphs, but many of the combo morphs are starting to look the same to me.

Unfortunately, I'm at work now and unable to post pics of the critters mentioned above. Sorry. Good topic by the way!

Glad you like the Abronia Will....Too bad you got rid of yours......They are my favorite lizard by far. I have just one male right now and am rounding up a female asap.....I do plan on breeding them next year.....

And those are some rather cool pythons you are working with....Too bad I cannot have any in Corpus Christi, Texas....City ordinance and all....LOL
But that ordinance kept me away from the BP insanity you mentioned.....

Good luck with the Boelens. It'd be nice for someone to start CBB'ing them.

I'm with you on the balls...I really like the normal and some of the morphs but that market's just insane, too many morphs that aren't that distinct, too many genetic pea soup animals that all look like muddled messes...

My daughter is sucking me into the ball trap!! I am actually asking questions on genetics, etc. LOL!!

I keep a yellowfoot tortoise, two redfoot tortoises, a pair of russian tortoises, a pair (hopefully) of mali uros ("male" is still young), and two female bearded dragons. All the above are mainly pets with no breeding plans except for the uros, but thats probably a few years down the road if the "male" actually matures into a male LOL!! The male russian tort courts the female religiously, but in the past four years they have not produced any clutches!!

Good luck with the non-snake critters!! I really like the chams!!

By the way John, I took the plunge somewhat into mexmex and got a 1.2 adult trio from a buddy of mine on breeder loan. I am excited to be working with these animals for sure!!! A pair are speckled and should produce some nice babies next season!!

Kevin,
Show me the Mex Mex man.....I am sooo addicted to them right now.....I can't get enough....LOL

And are yours speckled or granite....I think it is a line bred trait that just gets better with every generation.......The result is the Ultra Granite/Speckled........My Ultra Speckled Female laid slugs this year, but it was her first time as well her mate's......next year should go better....I hope.....I am thinking the male was brought up too late and did not produce viable sperm....next year I am going to "bring up" the males earlier than the females......

She is trying. Of course being 13 her mind changes day to day on what she decides to spend time and effort on doing LOL!! I am working on tempering my desire to get her cool reptiles with her desire to actually work and care for them properly!! Still, I would get her started into ball pythons in a heart beat if she shows the dedication to caring for them and learning about them to properly keep and breed them.

As much as I enjoy my Kings and shooting the breeze with Y'all about them I think if I could work with a small group of legal CB Shinglebacks again. longterm, getting a baby or two a year and keeping them till we are all old and gray I'd ditch y'all in a heart beat (Nothing personal)

with the snakes it;s a supply issue. I can't legally collect on public lands at all in TX, or off roadways, and I don't know any local ranchers/landowners that will let me collect on their land...and I refuse to buy from a dealer with tank upon tank of wildcaught animals spreading godknows what parasites and diseases back and forth.

Thanks Pyromaniac.....
Western Fence Lizards would come in handy scenting lizard eating hatchling snakes.....I keep 3 anoles, 2 med. geckos and a ground skink as pets just for scenting.........I wish I could get some sceloporus....If I had a colony of them they would sure come in handy.......

I used to keep an Anole for just that reason but he gave me the weirdest look when I tried to rub a dead pinky on him. LOL

Seemed kind of wrong and creepy to me too!

pyromaniac Jun 15, 2010 09:15 AM

I would put the ft pinks in a jar with the lizards and let them walk around on them and lay on top of them. Then I started raising my own mice and switched to live so the lizards were retired from this rather unpleasant duty.

pyromaniac Jun 15, 2010 09:10 AM

My group of one male and his harem of four.

Some of my hatchlings.

I got into keeping fence lizards when I first got baby pyros, to scent pinks. As it turned out, the pyros did fine without the scenting, but the fence lizards became an interesting project itself.
These are sceloporus occidentalis, but any of the other sceloporus would make good scenting.

Kings were my introduction to reptiles when I was a kid and they will always hold a special place for me. For many years now my collection has consisted of only snakes. Mostly because I have been traveling and moving a lot, and any animals that eat crickets or salad can't be left alone for a week! But recently I have been getting back into some of the herps that I used to keep as pets as a kid...

The most recent additions (no pics online yet) include a pair of CB carpet chameleons, a pair of Dendrobates tinctorius azureus, and a conlony of dubia! I feel the dart frog bug kicking back into gear every time I look at them... hmmm... I can fit more 10 gallon tanks somewhere...

The two pictured are actually from Doug Kranich. I believe they are mostly from love stock but it wouldn't surprise me if he had some abotts in the mix.

BobS Jun 17, 2010 08:08 AM

Whatever the make up they are beautiful. In N.J. we are not allowed to have normal Corns anymore, only amels. If I could I'd definitely love to have some Oakatees. Good luck with them.

zach_whitman Jun 17, 2010 02:44 PM

Haha, I know your pain. I grew up in NJ and while I was never big into corns I always wanted one nice pair of okees. Moved to Colorado and now I have myself a trio!

Pretty dumb law if you ask me. There used to be a store that got away with calling everything "possible hets" I am pretty sure they changed the law to only allow visual morphs now.

varanid Jun 17, 2010 03:33 PM

because 99% of the corns in the pet trade are wild caught right?

In N.J. Corn snakes are considered an endangered species. Seems to be like white mice and goldfish pet trade wise. There appears to be no reasoning with the powers that be. Easier to make a law than be realistic about it. A handful of knuckleheads who have to have wildcaught versus thousands of tax paying, law abiding, permit holding hobbyists that would rather have a captive bred, non parisitized beautiful Abotts type Oakatee corn type. It makes sense when you think about it....? A LONG time ago when it started it supposedly had some thing to do with some one who was caught poaching them in the Barrens. When questioned respectfully further for numbers of arrests, stats to back it up etc. it seems there was very little backing it up other than they have no way of telling wc from CB. Law enforcement wise thats like saying you caught 2 people with with fake licenses so everybodys drivers documents can't be accepted as valid. It's how knee jerk politics/laws go. Most of us would rather spend $50.00 dollars on a quality animal we will keep and treasure for years rather than walk through ticks, mosquitos and brush to get some scaggy biting, nervous ho hum looking corn snake but what does common sense have to do with it?

Recently though I ran in to a woman at the top that seems to have her act together and is a decent reasonable person in the permit office. Need more like her. Maybe theres hope?

Next time you go to a reptile show and see HUNDREDS of inexpensive corn snake hatchlings practicly being given away remember that in N.J. they are viewed on the same level as Bald Eagles. And folks wonder why average good folks can get serious resentment to authority/government officials instead of being whole heartedly supportive of them working on their side.

Sorry for the rant....
I used to keep a lot of Corns.

The typical hobbyist can breed a hundred in a year easy.

It's theorized they came up in railroad ties years ago by some so they may not even be NATIVE to begin with.

Bob.
