AHHHH this is so disappointing and frustrating...

divinitry Sep 23, 2003 09:11 AM

For all my geckos i normally use minerall for calcium dusting but a few weeks back i ran out so i picked up some generic brand from the pet store (i cant remember the brand, ill check at home) and used it for a few weeks until I got another shipment of minerall in....and to my HORROR it seems that the geckos who were HATCHLINGS at the time that I used the replacement dust are all showing signs of MBD...I can't tell you how devastated I am. I realized this a few days ago and have been pumping minerall into their diets and in just a few days their symptoms have stopped but unfortunately as will all MBD cases their is damage that never goes away I has only affected about 4 or 5 of my babies but those 4 or 5 now have permanent damage or deformities to their legs, and some of them are very very beatiful little baby leos. I just hate the fact that I spend so much time taking care of my leos, and I take such good care of them and this something like this happens because of a cheap brand...I'm just so upset right now

That's tereible Justin, but confusing as well. Is the supplement phosporus-free? If it has phosphorus in it they can get MBD. Does it have a little D3? Supposedly they can get MBD without a little D3 or sunlight, though I've never seen it happen in leos, and they can also get too much D3. What are their sypmtoms, exactly?

so im not sure of the ingredients but ill check it when i go home this weekend...of the five affected two are very very mild and you have to look very hard to realize any of the symptoms, two others are moderate (a noticable limp) and one guy is doing pretty bad, but I'm working with him night and day, and he's getting a lot better than he was. Financially it sucks because obviously I would never take money for any of these animals, but I will be adopting them out to good homes, and some of these leos are NICE Anyways, just wanted to rant and vent my frustrations, I feel so stupid because i know it probably has to do with the contents of the calcium

PS Sarah I emailed you last night...

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and in the past month I have been researching about leopard geckos and african dwarf frogs because I intend to purchase them within the next year. I was wondering what MBD stands for? It sounds like something I wouldn't want my future gecko to have, so I'm planning to steer clear from it after reading your post. What do you usually dust his food with? What was the generic pet store dust? Because I was planning to get MOST of my habitat accessories and food there (except terrarium, which I already have). I hope your leopard gecko babies are doing well! Even if they had deformities, I'd buy them to take care of them - Unfortunately, I'm looking to buy my gecko by the summer of next year when the new housing extension on my house is up!

metobolic Bone Disease, caused by the lack of calcium in the food supply. Will cause inflames joints and rubbery bones. Use good calcium supps to dust- Miner-all and Bone-aid are 2 good ones. Some people use reptocal but some of it has super high levels of d3. Stick with miner-all and you can't go wrong.

Don't panic just yet!!! I had a leo that I obtained that had VERY serious and well progressed MBD in the hind legs and she nearly recovered fully. The new owner could not even tell, even after telling them.

I have had hatchlings that for one reason or another got to the soft bone stage and they recovered fully in a short while. One this year as a matter of fact. It is in no way visible or detectable.

i know that most of them will be just fine (there is only one I am worried about) i am just disappointed in myself for allowing something like this to happen because i love my animals so much and i spend so much of my time taking care of them thanks though

it will be ok, first of all it is very unlikely that just a few days gave them MBD. In the very worst cases there can be recovery. If they were a bit rubery boned it will heal back with a little time and all will be well. Miner-all is one of the best keep using it.

Have you decided if you are going to put any of them up for adoption? If so, e-mail me I might be interested!
