For the first day I dust one cricket at a time and drop them in the cages one at a time. I find that dusting them slows the crickets down a little, making them easier to catch and one at a time is less stressful on newly hatched babies. If you dump a bunch in, they seem to act scared of the crickets.
Like I said, for the first day I throw in one cricket at a time (keep putting them in as they eat them). If after 10-15 minutes they dont eat it, I remove it and try again later. If they eat it, I put another in and keep going till their done. Its very time consuming, but worth it.
Day 2-7 (or so) I offer 3-6 crickets at a time. The first 3-6 go quickly, I put more in, but it takes them longer to eat those. Each cage is only averaging about 10-20 crickets a day right now (4 babies in each cage). But they are still young. They are 1/4 inch crickets, not the tiny cricks. I have never had a problem using 1/4 inch crickets.
Usually after a week I begin to offer 6-12 at a time (again as they eat them, I throw more in). At this age and up, they go through many more a day.
I try and feed them 3-4 times a day. If by evening there is a few that havent ate I hand feed them a tiny bit of zupreem baby bird formula and water. Try and limit the frequency and amount of hand feeding! Last year I hand fed all the babies for the first 3 days (while offering crickets) and the babies were slower to get started on crickets and ate less of them. I think they get used to the formula feeding!
I also allow them to eat as many crickets as they will until they lose interest. I just keep throwing them in as I stated above. I wait about 10-15 minutes at the end. If no baby has went after a cricket in that time I remove the remaining ones.
Everyone has a different method that works for them. This works for me and hopefully it will work for you
Take care and goodluck.... Lindsay
